Thanks chaps. I bought the Clarke 151te today. Just unpacked and it say that it needs a 15amp plug not a standard 13amp one. All the manager said was that it wouldnt run at max power off a normal house socket but the manual says don't use a standard plug..... So do I just have a standard house plug with a 15amp fuse in it and run on the lower 4 settings? I'm assuming it will trip the garage if I try full power although my old 180 amp one never did on full power....

A 13a plug should only have a MAX of up to a 13 fuse.
Remember fuses vary in quality !
Some are made in China
Same with plugs.
You may find that you pop a fuse on top settings so buy a pack.
Sorry buy a pack of what? 13a amp fuses and use a standard plug even though it says not to in the manual. I'm assuming it would just blow the trip if I went too high bit I'm not an electrician. I can't see 15amp plugs anywhere. Out of interest why can't you put a 15a fuse in a 13a plug? Surely the fuse is the weak link? Cheers for the reply.

the other difference it quotes 6mm which is more like 5mm whilst the other is 5mm thickness to weld

Run it on a 13 amp plug it won't be a problem until you ramp it up and even then it might be ok.
The manufacturers recommendations will always err on the safe side with anything.
Don't be tempted though to put any nails, fuse wire etc into that plug.
It's rated at 13amps so is the socket outlet.
You can run a separate 16amp circuit from your fuse board to a blue 3 pin 16amp commando socket and put a corresponding plug on the welder. Use 2.5mm twin and earth cable as a minimum and obviously a 16amp mcb.
You can then use that socket for any other bigger workshop equipment like a 3HP compressor etc.

It's just Clarkes covering themselves. I run a 160TM from a 13a plug, although the instructions say you can't. As Mike says, buy a good plug top not a pound shop one & some decent fuses. You will run it at least to the top but one setting without a problem & the top setting may blow the occasional fuse in the plug. It won't damage anything. Also with the cheaper plugs you have a job to get the wire in as its a bit thick.
