If you want to spend some money on it we could get it to my workshop and I would strip it down, repair/remanufacture anything required and build it back up. But obviously it depends what you want to spend.

Nothing is irreparable if it was made before 2000

Cheers for the offer. I think I'll just go for something smaller & new. I got it for about £1000 a few years back & it's served me well, but the size of it has always bugged me as it's such a lump. If the head of it could flip horizontal then I'd definitely want to save it.

As a latch ditched attempt to sort it I took the chain up to a bearings place & it had stretched, by 1/2 inch across its span. Only probably is now it's about 1/2 a link too short to meet up & there's seemingly no way to bring the cogs closer together. Is there there any way to ratchet pull the chain in on itself??
I don't want to add an extra link in because then I'll be back to the same thing of having the chain loose on the bottom & tight on the top, or vice versa. Urgh
