Second attempt... With 0.8mm wire this time.

Well this is my second practice session with the mig welder. Last time I was having trouble getting all the way through 2mm steel with 0.6mm.

So this is my attempt with 0.8mm with CO2 gas.

Took a bit of experimenting with the power and wire speed, but 2max and wire speed of 6 seemed to feel right. Although I'm not sure if I still need to be welding though to the other side more?

Any comments/advice greatly appreciated.

What welder you using there Manicmoo?....still looks like you could go "hotter"....are you maxed out?...what do you intend to weld?

thanks for the feedback.

It's a clarke 151TE. Most of the welds are on power 2/max. So I still have 3 min/max I can use for more power.

The reason I'm learning to weld is so that I can do some welding on my series 2a landrover chassis and footwells.

Wouldn't go any hotter at this stage - you'll have loads of penetration when you make longer runs, or do a butt joint. I'd experiment with whichever join types you want to do and see what they look like.

Looking OK there apart from the spatter. Is your torch position right?

hi Kev ,its not looking bad ,would be probably better doing a butt joint as this would be closer the type of joint you will be working with on the landy ,,,to be classed as full penetration you should see the "raised " portion of the weld underneath ,but a joint especially with a gap will probably show that anyway ,nice to know you still got some more settings ,try a butt joint ,,,,Gav

thats definitly a bit to high really if you do many welds on that setting it will distort it to much. the reason for all the spatter is because he's using pure co2 that creates alot of spatter try getting your hands on co2/argon thats alot cleaner co2/argon 20% for me i have found this the better mix
