Due to a number of messages being generated on the car I have been thinking about getting a second hand computer. There is one on ebay for £39.99 from a scrapper. Do they need to be coded to a different vehicle?
Before you look at swapping the ecu have plugged in a diagnostic code reader to see what the messages are trying to tell you?
Generally ecu's are quite reliable and in this case it could be an entirely different cause giving you problems.
Fazerruss I have posted two other threads ref this fault and have been and done all the steps. Grasping at straws now!
Andy Stobbs is that a diy task or main stealer job?
No its running fine apart from the initial start when the messages are generated. if the warning disappears after recycling the ignition then all is good. Only problem is that message is a fail being generated by the ABS not talking to the engine computer. Luckily it has just been retested so I have a year to sort it!!
Where does the security code originate and is there a special machine needed that us mere mortals cannot get their hands on?
Basically no, the vw technician plugs his internet connected computer in, the computer reads the car info and communicates with ze Germans, then ze German computer looks up the passcode, passes it back to the technician's computer which sends it to the car and you're in.
Considering you were prepared to solder a bridge across the heater blower pack, how can you justify the expense of a replacement ECU, when you've really done very little to asses the fault codes you're getting.
I might be mistaken but I seem to remember using VagCom to code my fabia vrs key .. not sure if you could use it too retrieve any security info related too the ecu?
It's worth having just for scanning for faults etc.. they do 2 versions..1 is there free version and there is a payed for version ( can obviously do a lot more)
Hope this possibly helps.
with all the other threads i think you have more of a wiring problem
a lot of modern stuff seems to have this if the can cant talk it shuts itself down or blocks access as yours seems to clear itself i would start looking for corroded wiring plugs etc
on my Citroen C8 faulty petrol cap sensor caused BSI to block all access
AndyStobbs I have done what I can within the restraints of using a good quality reader and gaining what knowledge I have got from the messages generated. Still cannot find a troubleshooting guide to follow. The only common link with all the messages is the engine computer. I.e the ABS message is flagging the eng ctl module stating check the DTC memory! All the rest feed into the eng computer.
As regards the heater resistor pack I bought a new one and fitted it but I have also obtained a batch of the temperature fuses to replace on the removed item. 5 for 0.99p!
So it seems that from your comments then that it is a dealer job to replace the ecu. Whether they would be prepared to fit a second hand one is another thing.
I have visually inspected the wiring and a couple of earth points but all seems good at this time. Once the car warms up and the message is cleared all seems to work OK. It is just the initial first start from cold that the messages occur. I have the top hose sensor to replace when I next get access to the car to see if that helps.
Update. I bit the bullet and bought a sensor for the top hose. After fitting it I decided to have the cover off the fuse/relay box and inspect the relays having found where they were from a memory stick of the Elsawin data off ebay for the car. Pulled them all out(4) as it does not show which one is which and inspected them. No signs of corrosion or water and all gripping their connectors fine. Replaced them. Ran the car and so far the fault has gone! Now the sensor is one off two that is used to monitor the temp between top and bottom hoses of the engine and that difference is computed as a figure that is considered within spec. Both sensors are identical. I do not think that was the problem so it looks like it was the removing/refitting the relay that was the fix! The ABS message was involved as it talks to the engine computer on start up and if ok alls well. Obviously it wasn't when started from cold but did later.
As regards the message P1961 (about Engine Gas Temp Sensor 2 Bank 2 (G449) electrical malfunction sporadic 007 short to ground) I have spoken to the local dealer in Stoke and it is a diesel engine message and this car is a petrol!!
