Confusing intermittent fault occurring on start up from cold. This morning the car started ok and drove half a mile or so when I heard the coolant fan run (cycleing on/off engine,e temp still on bottom of the dial) and at the same time the ESP amber warning light (skidding car symbol) illuminates. Now the second fault, according to the handbook means that the control system has temporarily (for some unknown reason) switched off the ESP. It then says to reactivate switch off the ignition and then start again and bingo it works. And the fan then behaves as well. When this first happened I had just bought the car and so I decided to remove the battery and check it out with my load tester which showed it was fine staying in the 12 volt range under load. I then put it on a charge with one of the new electronic chargers (brilliant bit of kit) thinking it might have been triggered by a low battery voltage. The engine started ok both times. The latest occurrence happened after it had been stood 2 days. Any of you VW experts able to share your hard gained knowledge and experience on this please.
