I think the green MDF is better if you have a moisture risk, I made a media wall in my man flat part of the house but it is against the bathroom wall, I use car body filler for speed with nail heads and minor mess ups. This was built from alot of 8" x 8ft 18mm strips left over from a job, It is 2 planks glued with pva to make 38mm thick planks, Then clad on the front edges with some decent 40mm x 18mm pine.

I have good results using paintable iron on edging (edgebanding). No link to this supplier, but good results with their product (http://www.edgeband.co.uk/paintable-edging-pre-glued.html)
