Sealey supermig 220

First of all happy new year everyone..

Right time to get to the main point. I have been offered a sealey supermig 220 that's second hand, comes with pub co2, euro tourch but no wire.. Think the unit is around 4 years old and is in full working condition? Can anyone give me advice on how much I should be paying and also and prob most important how good is a sealey welder??
Oh and last thing will it do low amps for car body work??

Although called a 220, it doesn't seem to be quoted for duty cycle above 170A, so not good for lots of heavy work: 15% at 160A and 10% at 170A means it would crap out on regular work above 6 - 7 mm.

Alarmingly expensive m/c new, don't know if they cost around the same figure 4 years ago, though. Why anyone would pay that sort of money new when there are m/cs like the Portamig range around amazes me.

You'd need to check out condition thoroughly before parting with many notes. It may have had little use, or it may have had daily use in a workshop, try to check this out, and pay accordingly.

A Sealey 150 Pro we used years back put up with 3 - 4 years of workshop use before we sold it on, (virtually gave it away), but in that time we replaced the wire feed mechanism twice, as well as the usual shrouds tips, liners etc. It was a decent basic m/c, but a bit harsh at the bottom end - I think it only went down to 35A.

The m/c you are looking at goes down to 30A so should be reasonable for thin metal with practice, but if the price asked is around £180 - £200 up then you'd be better off looking for another m/c if it's had hard use, because there will be some things to replace before long, which means it's getting costly.

If you only want a m/c for car panels and light metal repairs etc, as the price creeps up beyond £200 you are getting into the range of buying a new Clarke 150A model, with a 12-month warranty, so think about it carefully.
