mike 109444 - your wiring diagram was spot on. I finally got it sorted, with the help of an electrician who looked at your diagram with a furrowed brow for 20 seconds and said - "yep, that'll work fine" -
So basically, the live was taken from the scotch lock connector at the bottom of the chassis, and the neutral went to the blue/white braided wire that goes from the black block on the PCB to the transformer. He said it was protected by a relay, and indeed, it works a treat
I've got nice 6mm bore gas piping throughout now, which means I can get more than 10l/min gas output if I need it (I couldn't before), and it welds very nicely in all with the rearranged wire feed stuff
