Sealey Sand Blast Pot

I went ahead and bought a 200L SIP compressor - will collect it Saturday. This should finally give me a half chance at DIY blasting! The 100L one is good but no match for a shot blaster.

I'll connect both compressors to my 32amp supply with a proper 16 amp splitter fly lead like this


And as mentioned good idea to set the motors so they don't try to start both at once. Probably give the larger belt drive one the largest range. So it's the lead compressor.

I also ordered a 25kg plastic bucket of the Sealey soda blast media. (Expensive stuff!) The blaster has some soda already in it from its last use I presume I'll need to break up and hoover that out as it's probably hardened up by now.

The soda will be for car bodywork. I have a w124 MB coupe which was sanded on a quarter panel and not primed. So it's started to rust. I will try the soda on that to clean it back to bare metal and immediately prime and paint this time.

And I'll pick up some regular shot blast media from the parts shop when collecting the Sealey bucket on Friday. They said they have lots of types on stock but had to order the soda in. I can keep the soda in the plastic bucket for finer stuff anyway it should store OK inside house and sealed in the plastic bucket

I guess it will make a right mess but I have tarps and rolls of plastic bodysheet so shouldn't be an issue. I have a 3HP 100L compressor which should be manageable for small areas.

Going back to your first post, yes it makes an obscene amount of mess! If you're blasting outside, some sort of tent structure will help and if you put plastic sheet on the ground then you can sweep everything up afterwards, run it through a sieve and re-use it. Be prepared for the grit to enter every orifice, including ones you didn't know you had. Some long gauntlets and a hood are essential

preferably an airfed helmet otherwise you will be gasping for air trouble is the comps wouldnt be man enough to use one and blast as well. best to use a visor and a respirator if u haven't got air fed

I do have another new 50L 2.5hp Wolf compressor but running 3x at once sounds a little extreme! I have a good respirator and full perpex face sheild so can start with that.

decent resperator and face shield will do ok need your hair washing after it mind

Sorry for the questions again- for the air line I have one old hose at present. The quick connect on it is rusted up I'll need a new hose really. Thinking of a PCL reel



Is a 10mm hose OK? I see 2x types of quick release fittings. I already have alot like this 1/4 type are they OK? Or since I need to buy new fittings a hoses to link the compressors is there a better flowing type I really should be using?

Thanks, I'll look for the xf couplings when getting more. I'll try to link tank to tank directly with those fittings. Then go out the drier reg with the 10mm Id PCL hose reel

This one already has the larger type of quick connect couplers. So I'll get more of those to join to my other 100L compressor. Waiting on the splitter lead to turn up also.

I have the PCL 10mm retractable hose and it’s good quality, the retraction spring could be a bit stronger though.
Change the fittings to XF as already mentioned including those on the compressor if different. As already mentioned Screwfix stock them and the PCL moisture trap/ regulator is the cheapest through them too but needs ordering for next day collection.

Got the 16 amp splitter today- is it just my OCD or why ship with 3no different plugs At least keep the 16 amp ones the same!

Or maybe it is deliberate who knows.

Sorry for the long delay. I have since got my garage all changed over to PCL XF high flow fittings.

I took just a few mins this evening to see if I could get this blast pot to function at all.

I knew from when I bought it that there was still media inside the pot and that the end of the gun was totally blocked up with it.

So I set about clearing out the gun which was easy enough and was just running it through a reg and off my 100L compressor to test it.

I got this spanner cleaned. Removed the paint from it fairly easily once it had cleared out the hoses.



Note it has the white soda in it. Which is the most gentle media for removing paint. It did remove the paint. But so gentle it left the rust!

I see also that I can twist the air valves and clean the gun after use with air. So I did that before putting it away.

I will get Sealey Shot Blast media (aka stronger rust removing fine media) clean it out and try it on a car in the coming weeks. I have a rusty quarter to clean on a w124 coupe.

It does create a mess so anytime I use it, it will need to be outside and count on power washing the street after.

buy a big cheap blue groundsheet and blast in the middle. it will catch most of it if you pull one side of it up while blasting

Hi @JOEPRO how are you getting on with the pressure pot? I'm getting cheesed off using an angle grinder + wire brush and could do with something aggressive for small derusting tasks, eg bench vice, old electric motors, etc. I could probably manage 18-20 CFM if I hook up a couple of compressors. How quickly does it get through the media as I'd like to know if it would be cheap enough to run as a total loss system using iron silicate perhaps? Eg sweep up and tip in the bin rather than try to reuse. Couple of kilos per small job, or would it be much much more?

I have not used this blast pot since I got a larger blasting cabinet and tandem compressor so that does all my parts blasting. I'll use the blast pot on a car restoration at some point
