Sealey S0816 150 Amp

Hi guys,

im new, im from Corsham, wiltshire.

I need to do some welding on my wagon, and i've always wanted to learn to weld, so having read around on this site, ive decided to get a gas mig welder.
i want to cope with stuff as thick as 4mm, so it looks like 150amp is what i need.
Now, i looked around and found a Sealey 150 amp for just under £200. First question is, is this known to be a shockingly bad piece of kit that i should avoid?
second question is is there a better deal that i should consider?

and thirdly, can gas welders take both big bottles or smaller disposables? Ideally id like to get one that can take both, so that i can start with disposables, but in the future get a propper gas cylinder when i need it.

hi converting between big and small cylinders is easy just need the correct regulator and a adaptor pipe that connects between the output on the reg and a 4mm pipe. As for the machine i have no knowledge of it my self. Worth looking at the Clarke range a fair number on here have one.

Also, if converting to a large cylinder you will need somewhere to put it. Does the Sealy have a proper chassis with wheels or is it a hand-carry job? Proper pain having to move the welder then go back and get the bottle, then find something to tie it to so it doesn't fall over ...

its a portable with wheels, but no chasis for the cylinder.

I thought about this though, once i have this welder i can build a chasis to carry it and the cylinder.

I checked and the unit comes setup with a regulator which works with disposable type bottles of gas. So this is fine for getting me started.
But later when I wanted to move to full size bottles, id need to buy a different regulator and pipe, right?
How much would I be looking at for that?

I guess the question is, should I fork out more now for one which works with full size bottles, AND buy a smaller regulator for the disposable bottles.

for a reg and the pipe looking @ about £40 disposables don't last long especially when you are learning. I have converted my small Clarke to run on pub bottle with CO2. Not the best gas but for my use it works

Hi joell,i'm about 10 miles away from you,and have an old sealey 130 xt if you want to come and try it out give me a pm,we can arrange something for next week,also i use co2 i get for £12 locally ,but you would need a new/different regulator,if you buy the regulator from weldquip (on here)he can supply one regulator which can be used withpub gas (co2) or argon sheild if you decide to rent argonsheild as well, and welcome to the forum....Gav

No, stick a normal 13a plug on it and it'll work fine.

You can get 15A plugs but it's pointless as you will then need to change the socket & wiring to suit, it's much easier to fit a 13A plug wich will do the same job
