Seal Required (Plumbing)

This is the inlet to the toilet cistern. Just wondering if there should be a seal on the grey connector? On brass versions there is usually a fibre washer, but with this being plastic I'm wondering if it just deforms and seals?

Yep, rubber washer or fibre, your choice. Or PTFE tape, dont overtighten, it will break.

Rubber washer. I don't agree with using PTFE tape, it's for thread sealing, not bodging. The fitting is plastic and has a square flange so use a rubber washer and don't overtighten.

PTFE tape is inappropriate here, the seal is between the flange and the end of the inlet pipe. Even if you sealed the thread, water could still find its way out of the back of the nut.

Or (speaking as an oldish plumber) roll some ptfe into a thickish string and wrap it round where the washer would go, forming a taper, as above tho, never on the threads

I've done it many times when a washer has failed and I'm in the loft, the van seems so far away

Plus it's not called plumbers tape for everything without reason

I'd prefer rubber, like the rubber washers in the plastic connectors on washing machine hoses. More give than red fibre.

should have a tapered rubber washer, but anything will do fibre or rubber, just nip it up dont overtighten unless you want it to leak

sorry but that fitting looks like a 15mm tap fitting and your toilet fitting is a 1/2" the fittings just look so off from each other

you can also use a rubber seal as long as it slides down the plastic top but only hand tighten the fitting

It's a 15mm to 1/2" bsp standard tap connector. 1/2" bsp is the standard fitting on a cistern.

Some cheese (soft english cheese), rubber, fibre seals and PTFE for good measure, then braze it lightly with a blow torch. No seriously im just taking the p°ss.

Bought a 1/2 inch rubber shower washer pack from Screwfix. The inner hole seems a bit small. Are they meant to be a kind of stretch fit? That was the only 1/2 inch rubber washer I could find.

It'll probably leak. It's not the correct washer. You could use an O ring or, failing that, spend a couple of pounds and buy a new fitting.
