The camera looks good. Does it just loop record?

Dash cam has an sd card in it, there are various ways to set it up, cont record, motion detect etc, mine is set to start recording when its plugged into the cigar lighter, then it records in 15 minute blocks, each 15 minute file is around 900meg in size, sound quality is rubbish so I've turned it off, when the cards full it records over the earliest recording, file format is AVI so you can stick em straight on the PC and mess with them

Wired is safest, most reliable and the best quality. The band that the wireless cameras use is far too congested in urban areas and is easy to jam. Maybe if you lived in the wilds somewhere, but it is difficult to find quality CCTV products that are also wireless, as it is something of an oxymoron.

Remote viewing is done over the internet. Your DVR is connected to your router and gets its own address that you can access just as if it were another website. You can also view it on many smartphones.

Computer isn't required as the DVR does all the clever stuff.

Hiding cameras depends on the individual point of view. My opinion is that a "chancer" may think twice if the cameras are visible. Another school of thought is that you are telling the lowlife that you have something to protect.

What I have done is to put the DVR and network connections in the roofspace. In the event of a burglary etc, it's unlikely that they would find and destroy the recorded evidence.

If you buy and IP camera, get one with PoE (Power over Ethernet), if you buy the right network switch then the camera is powered by the same cable. I always thought wireless cameras were pointless as you still need to get power to them which in my opinion is harder than getting the network to them.

I've been testing Zoneminder, if you have an old PC, throw a couple of reasonable sized discs, install Linux and Zonefinder for nothing, get a PoE switch for about 50 quid, or you can buy power injectors if you only have a couple of cams. Sensibly priced POE Cameras are between 50 and 130 quid depending on quality and resolution.

Linux/zoneminder installation does need a level of techie knowledge unfortunately but its surprising how many people out there do this stuff so shouldn't be that hard to trade a few beers etc. for help.

Don't use motion detection on cameras, it's usually useless and doesn't distinguish between a burglar and a tree. Zoneminder, Blue Iris etc. are much better at motion detection as you can exclude areas of the image from it.

but first of all they cut the telephone wires break in turn of the electric and wear balaclavas any burglar alarm boxes just fill them with foam cameras no matter how good cant see through balaclavas

Cut the safe open in the middle of the office with a 9" grinder, lot of effort for a cheapo digital camera I reckon! That was the cameras that record onto SD Cards. Found bits of camera/light all over the yard for days, must have had a good swing at it!

That's why we like to install the DVR in a loft. Camera might go, power might go, but recordings up to that point will be safe. Sensible positioning of cameras means that plenty of useful images are obtained before they get close enough to cause damage.

Our last premises had a shipping container outside as a Radioactives store, though the Police counter-terrorism bods made us take the Radioactive signs down as it was telling the Fundies where we kept the bombs
One Friday evening I locked up the place and went home. Twenty-five minutes later I was called to attend the premises as the monitored alarm had triggered and as it was signalled as being from the bomb store the Police ARU were already there but couldn't get in the gate (obviously too unfit to climb over the fence ).
On the back of the building were two cameras; whether they were fakes or not is irrelevant but the scrotes had dragged a load of old shipping crates across the car park and stacked them so as to block (or so they hoped) the cameras' field of view whilst they hacksawed(!) through the hinges of the container doors. As the doors fell open the alarm triggered silently. On seeing there was sod-all worth nicking (and no Radioactives, more's the pity, a few cancers in later life wouldn't have come amiss ) they turned their attention to the other container, the one NOT monitored by the alarm. They must have had only the one blade (broken bits were found on the floor) or were disturbed by the Police arriving as they'd got as far as opening the door levers until the doors were stopped from opening by the huge lock in a box.
This attack prompted the bosses to dispose of the contents of the container: lots of 10Kg lead bricks used to build x-ray enclosures in the past. When they were taken away by the scrap-man's skip wagon and the cheque issued, it was for £24,500 (there was 24 tonnes of lead).
Shame the thieving scum will never know they went for the wrong container first
