I used to drink a fair amount of scrumpy in my 'younger' days - around 40 years ago - and used to get it from a place in Somerset called Rich's Farm. Haven't been there for years now but it's changed a lot and probably not quite so cheap. IIRC it was something like a couple of quid for a gallon including the container, and it was filled when you turned up. Once thinking I was Billy Big ********, thought it would be a good idea to make the ultimate Snakebite - mixing scrumpy with Special Brew! Needless to say, after consuming no more than about a pint, I was so ill I thought I was going to die Thankfully, I'm not so stupid these days.................................

There is a pub out on the marshes at a remote place called hollowshore near Faversham, The Shipwrights arms, they used to do some locally made scrumpy from wooden barrels. Strong dry Looney juice & Medium Looney Juice. My wife likes cider so had two pints of the Strong dry version. I wimped out & stuck with shipwrecked ale
The Looney juice was cloudy & had the distinct bouquet of easy start. She was exceedingly ******!

I remember my dad buying a gallon of cider for 2/6d. That's 12.5p. It was a long time ago to be fair lol. That was near rackenford. There are still plenty of farms selling cider at the farm gate, if you know where to look, and last time I checked it was still lethal. The good stuff slides down like milk. You wouldn't even know it was alcoholic...until you try going to the loo and find your legs have become disconnected!

I have a nice scar on the back of my hand which is a constant reminder of that very fact!

Thought it had finished fermenting but its taken off again over the last few days with the favourable temperatures. Ive sampled some and its done I think (sold my homebrew gear years ago so no hydrometer). Tastes very nice, will bottle it up at the weekend

I used to take Americans to a pub in Sheffield where you got a certificate if you could drink a third of a pint of the worlds strongest ale........it was what I call Barley Wine and unpleasant tasting but the Yanks loved it

i'm not surprised its only sold in 40ml bottles. (miniatures)
more than a couple of measures, you"ll end up on a drip being treated for methanol poisoning.

(normal distillation concentrates just the ethanol, to which a small amount of undistilled brew is added, so it tends to remove the poisons.
ice distillation concentrates the poisons by just removing the water)

I've never sampled it, but if it's so potentially dangerous how are they allowed to sell it?

maybe theres not as much danger from it as i was led to believe - or the methanol is removed in a different way which isnt mentioned in the marketing?
(it could be heat distilled off first, for example?)

i honestly dont know - i just remember discussing it with a pharmacist aquaintance of mine in relation to ice-distilled apple brandy, and why it would be a "bad idea"

Never tried it Big Egg, but seen about how to do it. Apparently the idea is to chuck away the first 10% & the last, this contains the dangerous bit. I read this in a brewing book years ago, I might be wrong on the percentages, but that is the general principle.
