Good evening fellow forum dwellers,
I was wondering if anyone could shine some light on an issue I'm currently having with regard to forming scrolls. I'm probably just overlooking something obvious, but any hints or pointers in the right direction would be muchly appreciated.
I recently acquired a wrought iron jig set from a certain well known tool company for the seemingly good price of £29.99. The instructions were as clear as mud, but I figured "this shouldn't be toooo difficult" so I followed the instructions as best as I could and filled in the gaps using my noggin'.
First attempt, I popped some 10mm x 2mm mild steel flat bar (well within apparent 20x3 capability of the jigs) and cranked a small bit at the end. I then clamped the flat bar onto the large scroll jig, as advised by the instructions. Now, I expected a certain amount of resistance and springiness to the metal, but I can't for the life of me seem to make it form properly around the jig. It always just flies straight back around the jig and thwacks me in my (thankfully, ample) gut. In an attempt to develop my manliness and to stop being so much of a Jessy, I soldiered on and then put the (partly) formed bar into the smaller scroll jig. However, same stuff happens - just swings straight back around and ends up hitting me.
To see if it was just that particular metal I was using, I also tried some 16mm x 2mm flat bar. Pretty much the same, but didn't hurt quite as much. I guess my gut was 'manning up' by this point.
It's not like I expect it to just totally stay in shape the first time you bring it around the jig - but I can spend ages trying to form it and hold it in place - but nothing seems to work. Darn thing just springs straight back at me - even when I clamp it all the way around and leave it for a while.
Apologies if I'm just being completely daft and missing something, but I just can't seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong.
Any advice? *grabs the nearest asbestos shield*
