Id like to see a pic of the setup
1/2" over that length will deflect a bit?
Probably collet one end and centre the other, pop the travelling steady on it, it's only threaded for about 190mm.

just to close this off, grim_d did me proud.
i finally got around to putting the vice back together today.
i then used a old 3/8 extension and a couple of nuts to make the handle. i intend to file it down to a nice round blob on each end, but i, frankly cant be bothered today. so its all working today, many thanks for you efforts buddy, i will finish it and make my bit look good enough to compliment your excellent work, i promise
