I hadn't considered using either an old carbon brush or piece of copper to start on. I'm now pretty confident starting 1st time where I want to so am concentrating on trying to improve on the actual welds.
I had a bit of a gap in practice whilst waiting for an opportunity to collect a fresh gas bottle, and after 2 weeks I managed to collect one today. Got it all setup this evening and found a couple of bits of stainless to have a try with. It was 3mm thick, so 1mm thicker than the mild steel I had been using. I found the extra thickness helpful in not over penetrating. I quite liked welding with the stainless, the puddle seems really nice and clear to see as is the reflection of the tungsten in the puddle.
On the following photo I think my best weld was my 2nd attempt (2nd from the right in the photo). on the butt weld it was all going well until I started running out of filler so had to try feeding more. At this point I stopped concentrating on Arc length and focussed on the feeding therefore I let the arc get very long. I have no idea what went on with my last weld, obviously went all wobbly for some reason.
