Scrapping car batteries

I got £760 for the last lot I took in. Everyone filled to the top with water.

I couldn't be so deceptive and if he caught me doing it once my scrap price would be knocked.
A few smart arses down my local yard think it's clever soaking seats and filling fuel tanks with water, you will only do it once and he will remember.

I would think it's the first thing they check when a car suddenly weighs more than usual.

I've never met a lightly muscled scrap yard bloke . . . so I don't find any way to pick a fight with them

batteries mum ???

How do you identify a batteries Mum ? Family free ?

I only found this out when I took about 530kg in to scrap and they started asking me about consignment notes.

So if you drained the acid, flushed , then beat them to bits would it be worthwhile to get a better lead price ?

They recycle the casings as well as the inners, there's a plant near here that does them and all the scrapyards take their batteries there whole.

Really if we were any sort of men at all, we would be "remanufacturing" our own batteries in flip flops

Did that a few years ago when I had about twenty to get rid of - stuck all the lead in a metal drum and weighted it in - think I got about £70 for it.
Figured it probably wasn't worth the effort and mess next time - best weigh them in as they are and leave it for the kids in India to do, they've had a lot more practice!

Yes I would say this is definitely a case of not worth the effort. Plus there are likely a few grades of what they pay out for scrap lead. And anything coming out of a battery is going to be on the bottom rung. Plus you really don't want to be chopping up batteries containing acid unless wearing certified flip flops.

The amount of batteries I see people giving away or throwing out (and other scrap metal) is crazy. "Normal" people don't realise there is value in scrap, it just means more money for me.

I see heaps of people advertising free scrap collection and heaps of people in facebook groups looking for people to collect it. If I lost my job it's definitely one thing I would start doing, at least temporarily.

I do save every bit of scrap I have, might as well make money off it vs the council doing it.

I am guilty of taking small quantities of metal to the local tip on occasion. If its all in my trailer already it's easier to toss it whilst going around the recycling skips. To drive on out to the scrappy with small qty of metal wouldn't hardly cover the diesel IMO. But yes better to keep it aside and go to scrappy and get £ I just don't like the stuff gathering around my house and don't have space at all.
