Scrapping car batteries

For anyone curious there is a scrap value in dead car batteries.

Usually I take em to the local tip where they can recycle them but scrap merchants do the same and pay you. Not much but if you have a few may be worth taking em all at once. I gathered up these from my MBs over the past few years got £55 cash which is better than £0 at local council tip.

Even its a tenner its better than lining some totting tip operatives pocket, depending on how far the scrap man or tip is from you.

think i got a fiver for a few i took out of a fire alarm system . was allready at the scrappies taking scrap cable in got a grand for that

For those ones in my photo in post #1 I got £55 cash from the scrappy this morning.

My plan is to spend £50 on more tools and squander the rest.

Never understood the scrap metal pile/car battery pile at the local tip.

Whichever direction you drive to get to it, you drive past a scrap yard.

With a bank account, a car reg and the ability to speak, you get money for the stuff you would give away.

We weigh in our dead batteries from our boats at work every year.

Normally get 3 or 400 euros out of it, split 3 ways, Christmas mini bonus.

Keep some sulphuric acid out of the batteries before taking to scrappie, handy to have.
Be careful not to splash/ spray trouser legs when draining the old batteries though.

If you drop in over 500kg u need a note from the batteries mum that says its ok to take them down the scrappy

I remember a R. Whites lemonade bottle in the shed when I was a nipper, it was trichlorethylene not lemonade. Was told not to drink it so being a good nipper and scared of Dad I left it well alone.

Drinking bottles should never be used to store anything you wouldn't want someone to ingest. No matter how clearly labeled they are it's still a risk. A child or vulnerable person may not be able to read or ignore warnings. No one but me is in my garage 99% of the time but still this is a rule I will never deviate from full stop.

What's the best type of container to store it in?.

an old coffee jar works for me

I use sulphuric acid as pickle after silver soldering. bought before concentrated sulphuric acid became a controlled substance.

I was talking just yesterday how on a hot day my mate gulped diesel from a coca cola bottle, I was running an engine up on.

On another note there was a guy years ago on a construction site who always brought a 2L bottle of diet coke with him and drank it throughout the day. It was his coke and he didn't share with anyone that was understood. This went on for years.

Then one day a young lad grabbed it and took a swig.... it was full of Buckfast or similar
