Cripes! That’s the most wear I’ve ever heard of!As Brad says. Its to replace material that been removed to bring it back to a flat state. Turcite comes in different thicknesses to account for the amount removed.
My M300 had spent all its lift surfacing drum brakes and discs. it had 70thou of wear in 6". If the bed and saddle had been reground and left without rebuilding with Turcite, the Apron would also be 70thou lower, effecting the Feedscrew, powerdrive and rack to carraige wheel height
Excellent description of the process too.
I must admit thinking about what happens with alignment etc. makes my head hurt a bit.
So excuse my ignorance, but if you’ve got a lathe with really deep wear like yours had, what happens with the shafts etc. when carriage is in that ‘pocket’? Is the shaft alignment not already problematic?
Sorry I’m not being a pedant I’m just curious how worn machines carry on going and how bad it has to get for them not too!
The scraping course looks the absolute business too!
