Im 27 and feel im in the wrong country, im a doer at heart not a pencil pusher. Sadly my practical efforts are worth less

I'm 46 earn a mediocre wage, but it's ok over here, as property is relatively cheap, but then you spend all your time and money restoring it.
I can't complain.
If I was in the U.K. don't know if I'd manage to own a house.

100 years ago we would of been well respected but not well off, earning skilled wage has never been high.
Now machinists are almost as low as welders, actually least we get paid by the hour where machinist gets paid by job.
you get talking to Clive and you start to realise that The skills and knowledge he has are probably that of one of the last generations in this country, most people with his experience are at retirement age or passed away.
Oh and he is a very good welder too unlike most engineers!
Scraping is so labour intensive and today’s world is throwaway.
it’s in specialised equipment or refurbishment of that equipment where it’s still commercially doable.
Repair of large parts, castings or mining kit etc can only be done on some old school equipment though not modern CNC. Shaft repair etc.

VTL, Horizontal Borers, Jig Borers, Grinders all worthwhile repairing/bringing back to tolerance by scraping. Lathes, scrap. Buy cheap from Taiwan throw away in 5 years, write it off tax bill.
The government doesn’t help.
Iran, India, Russia, Czech Republic, ukraine still refurb machines, I’ve sent three lathes to Poland over the years.

Better than scrap but sad all the same
Well, we still do it - a very necessary part of the build of our machines - our engineering is so dead, we opened up another site a couple of years ago, and took another earlier this year - three acres under one roof!

Sounds interesting , I've seen a few major machine shops but all CNC and they even got rid of their small toolroom manual however they where mainly oil and gas.

We have spoke at length many times about the travesties unfolding within manufacturing in our lifetime. UK will end up a service country like London. Nothing to offer but office space and typists.
