Scrap prices

I've been having a clear out and we've loads of cast window frames (C.1906) and broken rainwater pipes. I don't think they'll have much of an architectural value so thinking of weighing them in.
Does anyone know what the approximate value of scrap cast iron is at the moment? Is there a website giving this sort of information? I've googled without much luck.

Our locals seem to vary, sometimes offering double the amount of others.

I weighed some "Misc Ferrous" last week and got £0.11 per kilo. These were modern radiators I noticed whilst driving past a house. Asked the builder who was glad to have them out his way, took them straight to the scrappy and got £20.50 in my pocket.

Prices vary daily, the lowest I've got for ferrous was £0.09 per kilo, chrome steel (aka "magnetic stainless") washing machine drums.

Cast iron should fetch a bit more than "Misc Ferrous", weigh it in seperately.

Regarding the window frames, I suggest you contact the "Brooking Architectural Museum" Brooking.

Don't weigh in the frames. They will fetch a better price as frames at the right shop.

last lot i ran in was around £75 for the ton, mixed light, sheering was around £20 over mixed, It does jump around daily, so pick your day carefully.

That's one fascinating bloke! had a quick look and a read thru' before going back to my clearing the tangled area behind the shed and feeding my ever hungry chipper. I will see if we have a complete window and offer it to him for his museum. The Uni of Greenwich is 10 mins from where I grew up and where my mother still lives, I'll have to pay it a visit.

It would be nice if they got used, part of the reason for checking scrap price was to set that as a minimum if we could find an interested buyer. (Maybe the local auction who occasionally do special architec. salvage sales). I am a little doubtful as to their usefulness as they are not entire windows. We live (and work) in a converted workhouse hospital (built 1906). All the windows (I think we once counted..80 or so) are cast iron with tiny panes. They used to have a section that opened, pivoting on a pin and dropping onto 2 fan shaped glazed sections (I've seen similar windows in old schools). The glazing bars continued behind the opening sections - effectively they are barred so anti-escape! (or anti break-in). They were so not weather proof that we removed most of them and glazed the gap So what we have is about 100 odd fan shapes and I guess 50ish of the openers. Most intact, so they could be used as small opening (or fixed) windows in their own right. We did once think of using them to make a green-house. Once. So much work and so little time.
Part of me is loathe to part with them as they are part of the history of our building. I'll try and post some pics tomorrow, maybe someone will have some suggestions. We are in the tentative process of trying to acquire a piece of woodland adjoining our garden so there is a strong likelihood of more SHEDS . Anyone want any creative building work?

Heh ratty, Im just in the process of extending our garage, when I removed a old leaking shower cubicle from the house. I was shocked to discover it was glass, which was quickly followed by the revelation that they would make cracking high level windows for the garage extension to let a bit of ambient light in for a change. Theyre even frosted for privacy...

11p a kilo, hmmm Im not sure its worth the diesel and my time to take a small load at that rate. If you had a few tonne of dead machinery or stuff mind...

I never make a special trip with ferrous unless I have a car (Volvo estate) full, like with those radiators. I try to arrange visits to the scrappy when I happen to be driving past anyway.

Heh, that wasnt a stab at you or thriftyness, our "local" scrapyard is 40 odd miles away and it would cost me more to go get the van from where it parks and load it up!
I have three car carcasses in the field to get shut of next time the big wagon comes around mind. See how green and planet friendly Im becoming. Im still not digging up the van I buried with a jcb mind

I got £1000 per tonne for pvc insulated copper cable

At those prices the windows must be worth more as windows to someone.
How about some original Edwardian windows in your boat Si?

These are they..in situ (just the opening part and fans) and awaiting their fate..

Those are very "institutional" - have you got a window pole with 'S' shaped hook on the end for opening and closing them? It would be sacrilige to weigh them in. Perhaps Ebay?

Might be a problem with their heat retention properties.... Unfortunately, the word "obsolete" jumps to the fore there.

Nevertheless, a great shame to weigh them in.

I think a greenhouse really is the thing for those.

Or perhaps you could build an accurate 1:1 scale model of a Victorian workhouse hospital?
