cant work this out someone offers something for sale for say 60 quid. if it isnt sold seller says it will go for scrap scrap price is only about a tenner and it would have to be taken in so why not sell it for a tenner or say nothing about scrapping it in the addy and 60 is the price wanted

So many ads too, along the lines of -

"X for sale. £500. Worth that in scrap."

(When scrap price would actually only be £40)

Sounds like a lot but the difference is actually quite small when you think about dealing with potential buyers, postage and packing, dropping stuff off at the post office etc, compared to just chucking it in the pile and weighing it in with a ton of other stuff...

I wish people would be more considerate for the recycling/upcycling community but I fully understand why they might actually just not want the bother.

As above, but I would have put it along the lines of, not having to deal with d* heads is worth quite a lot.

if u dont want the hassle of post and packing on top of scrap price just scrap it and say nothing or just say its x number of pounds delivered and dont mention scrap

I recall you used to get this a lot with guys scrapping cars on owners forums.

You'd get a few that seemed to use it as a way of guilting potential buyers into making a quick purchase, and if they don't get one, often scrapping it out of spite and for the drama.
They would always need the money and the space urgently, and that's why it went for scrap. Then a few weeks later they would buy another one because they were bored, and repeat ad infinitum.

Quite a few rarish cars crushed for the game, and people would get upset about it, but I found it best to ignore them and let them get on with it and waste their money.
I always assumed they paid more for it than they got in scrap so they must have made a net loss... Takes all sorts.

Can be true on bigger items like lathes, mills and plant if the price of scrap is high. Once made 2.5k in the scrap for a knackered excavator that would have been hard to sell for £1500.

I suppose the other thing to consider with some stuff is what 'scrap' means. Some will refer to breaking something down for parts as scrapping it, and quite a few machines, bikes, cars etc are worth more in parts than they are complete.

I had a recessing machine that I'd stripped any good parts off. I had no way of getting it to the scrap yard so I listed it on facebook for free, within 20min a guy was there to take it. Him and his pal couldnt lift it so he called for backup. Another 4 turned up and handballed 3/4 tonne onto a flatbed. All for maybe £50 of cast iron.

I reckon people who do that just have a grudge against the world - they're unhappy about some poor decisions they made, so they take it out on whatever it was they'd bought, and by proxy, the rest of the world. I kinda think that most cases of depression are at root just a grudge against the world (based on various depressives I've talked with)
