Many years ago I was covering a story in Manila (that does rather sound as if i was wrapping a book in brown paper!). Anyway. As I was saying, I was in the Phillipines on a story, one evening I was walking around Manila in the rain and ran across a road to find shelter. I never made it. Instead I disappeared down a large hole where some bar steward had knicked the cover. I fell straight down into three feet of flowing Philipino effluent!
Climbing out entailed covering the rest of my anatomy in the ordure. After standing in the torrential rain to wash as much off as possible, I walked back to my five star hotel and dripped the most evil mixture across the lobby floor and up to my room. I soaked in a scalding hot bath for over an hour, called room service and instructed them to take my clothes and shoes away and burn them and to send me the hotel tailor to come and measure me up for a new suit.
For weeks I could not get the smell out of my nose...
