i'm wanting to buy mum a decent pair of dressmakers scissors.
NOT tailior's shears: about 8-10" blade.
budget about 10-12 quid?

I don't just want to order a cheap'n'nasty pair from the bay. or a dear'n'nasty pair from hobbycrapt.

any recommendations?
electrician's scissors (my first thought) are too short.

Tk maxx in the kitchen section look for sabatier ones about 5 stay sharp for years

My wife has a set of Singer dressmaking scissors which I am not allowed to touch and they have lasted years, probably because I'm not allowed to touch them I have a pair of cheap ones from eBay and they work well, razor sharp. Another good make is Fiskars.

Fiskars are pretty good, we have some kitchen scissors that we've had for 20+ years.

Plenty on Amazon but nearer to £20

What's the difference between dressmaker scissors and tailors shears?

My dad's got a huge pair made by Wilkinson for cutting carbon fibre, I suspect they're out of your budget but it might be worth a look, they're definitely good.

These are obviously way to short so no good for you buy maybe helpful if anyone else is after some nice scissors, look for used surgical scissors on eBay. I paid about a fiver for these + a curved pair (which I've lost ), the cutting edges are brazed carbide!

I use a pair similar to those which belonged to my Granny - she died aged 96 nearly 60 years ago, but her scissors live on. Still good after all these years, although I don't abuse them.

dressmakers scissors are for trimming, cutting threads, and buttonholing

tailor's shears are for cutting out the patterns.

Usually about 2". The tailor's shears were made longer and called shears not scissors because in years gone by scissors were taxed but shears were untaxed because they were classed as tools not household utensils.

I’m a bit late to the party, but Fiskars are the affordable best, and take note, never, ever use dressmaking scissors for anything else. Not even to cut paper.

My mum was a dress maker, She caught me cutting some brown paper with a pair one day. Lets just say, I never did it again.

She owned a few duplicates; a pair at the sharpeners, and a pair to use
