It would have to be a fairly big job, with a lot of shuttering going on. Last time I used some was years ago.

I'd try a local hire firm, or your scrap yard they might have some kicking about. As for car jacks, I've looked at those myself for a bench jack, in the main the nuts are plastic

Well, I guess since I only work on large sites that could well be true Shox. I'm always picking up bits of it as I use it for anchoring my machines.

Can anyone say if C35 steel with Acme thread ( 16mm dia) is strong enough for my OP intended purpose?
What tensile would that be?

I would buy a set of spring compressors and modify them at least that way you get the correct threaded bar.
