That is a tricky one, but (not to turn this into a month python sketch) I didnt even have a desk or somewhere to sit other than my bed to do homework, it was usually completed at school, on an evening or in the morning. Projects didn't stand a chance

but times have changed. How many hours has she spent on her phone/with friends in the interim? And I'd venture to say if she'd approached @ronan earlier in the timescale he'd have been delighted to provide her with a workspace and advice/help.

Im the first one to complain about the youth of today, and genuinely respect and understand your viewpoint, one thing I have learned is things with youngsters are not always as simple as they seem

@Kayos I see the same thing happening time after time. As a teacher I despair at someone who sets a "science project" to be completed at home two months ago, from the sounds of it provides no materials or support and expects some form of learning to take occur. In the majority of cases it will be a parent that completes it..... that @ronan niece came to him with two days to spare is commendable, normally it is a night before job!

As far as I am concerned it is a win to just get the kids through the door and learning something in class. If they know they have work that they should have completed at home and haven't for reasons beyond their control they are far more likely to skive off and fall even further behind. Setting tasks like these without adequate support tend to have the undesirable effect of splitting the haves and the have nots. Done in class everyone can get a fair shot at building something that works and learn something. Homework has its place at specific ages and stages but on the face of it this task doesn't look great and the two month timescale in particular is a bit suspicious! That's about two years to a teenager I think.

She suffers from Krohns disease and adhd, she can be very blunt at times................but then again she is female. I reckon whats she is suffering is due to the hellish life she had to lead for years.

Went to RS Components today at lunch time and had my trousers taken down. There is nowhere doing electronics stuff for the hobbyist or amateur anymore. Do you lads in the UK have RS ? Is it a UK company ? Bloody expensive i can tell you.

to me school work should be done at school not at home, Its a childs time not school time.

oh and i got in trouble for it teacher was too busy nagging away i was bored of there speaking so did it in the 15 mins in lesson
oh and they didnt like it
didnt like being told, its done now while you was talking so refused it and told me to do it at home.
got told not a chance as its done now
so got dragged to headmasters office which meant i was getting out of lessons

then it was call the parents in
ensued the argument of doing homework in school time like me the father said its been done why so pathetic about it
why drag me into school over something so pathetic of doing homework thats been done in your time

in end i got no more homework sent from school

even ive had a few comments with school about my childrens homework and like ive told them whos teachin here me or you
because if its me there staying at home to do it

and they will learn more than what you can teach them

For this sort of project parts from ebay or Amazon are probably better value.

I've used RS and Farnell for hobby projects before but not cheap. RS' only selling point was the trade counters if you had to have the parts the same day. Nearest ones are a 2 hr round trip where I live now so haven't used one in years. All the other retail places are long gone

Lots of ideas for a demo motor already, we did something similar in physics class 30-odd years ago. If I had to do it again I'd try to get most of the parts out of the scrap pile.
Magnets from an old hard drive.
Wire from a scrap transformer (cut up the core as well and use it for pole pieces).
Cotton reel for the armature.

One thing I do remember from the demo - it was very easy to let the smoke out of the windings if you pushed it too hard

Hmmm.

While I didn't like doing it, I did it. And aged 50 and a bit, I don't regret a single one of those hours doing homework, research , writing, and arithmetic - although I do wish I had done a bit more of it at Uni . What it taught me, and what it taught me in the doing of it, has taken me around the world to places I've never thought I'd see, much less work in, live in, make friends in.

And if I still could, I would thank my dad for making me, and assisting me, and for going into school to discuss extra work to bring my southern taught ITA English up to Yorkshire spec. As a kid, it was a pain in the **** - as an adult, it has turned out to be an excellent investment for the future.

From mates experience, I have seen a kid swear blind there was no help, no materials, no intermediate reports required for long term projects . . . speak to teacher and a different tale used to emerge. Homework diary was then checked regularly and followed up on.

Fully believe parents have as much responsibility to ensure their kids get educated as the poor sod trying to do the teaching - and that would include time management

it was only an hour lesson and 15 mins of his nagging im bored in the first 5 mins so decided to do the homework he had talked about in first 5 mins thats what started it off

he didnt give me any homework after that comment

i didnt like pe either hated the thing didnt see the need to run around a cold windy field freeze hole kicking a bag of wind around i dont like football so certainly dont like it forced down your throat either
though give me 5 a side football and enjoyed that one

ive been back to college a fair few times

for a few building trades and also electronics tv and video passed them all

but my adulthood changed as i had to become a single parent

but i wouldnt change it even if i could have done

I found with PE, the "teacher" was pally with the 4 or 5 footballers, athletes and sporty types, and everyone else could get stuffed. Our "Changing room" was an uninsulated shipping container, Baltic doesn't begin to describe that thing in the middle of November i can tell you ! I just stopped going after a while, i was as fit as a jack snipe anyway, with being a cyclist and always out around the mountains with the lads i shot with.

I did think about those R Kraft, but the odds of them surviving the journey around the school, probably in a bag, is about 2% i reckon. Something a bit more robust is needed.
