I found this by the shed today,

All fresh and quite a bit of it. I've not seen any here before. It's the same colour all the way through, is it rat?
We back onto woods and have all sorts of animals here.
Do I need to get the trap out and starve to cat.....?

Looks like rats to me, use proper rat poison traps to get it on their fur to spread to the rest.
Good luck getting rid.

Does look like a longtail unfortunately. Any food sources or habitat you're leaving about the place? Compost heaps are nice and warm with food.

@WorkshopChris 4 doors down are having lots of work done but have been going for weeks already so not sure if they're coming from there.
@Johnseat what's a proper rat poison trap? Are they safe with cats?

From videos I've seen its not good for anything coming into contact with the rats, especially anything that eats them.

Spring traps work well use peanut butter as bait
At least they are selective it put in the right place unlike poison
A very effective poison is lead at 1200 feet per second

as above a good mk 4 fen trap with peanut butter or melted on chocolate on the plate

Spring traps as John says and anchor them down to something as well. Something took some we set probably a fox had the rat for supper.

I think it's a pen, probably the Biro type , think it's red but can't be%100 on that.
