I was using a rosebud torch to heat a bearing housing today: nothing out of the ordinary. Applied heat, turned the gas off temporarily at the torch while I pressed the bearing. When I went to the tanks to turn everything off a minute later the acetylene looked odd - I'd set 5psi, the needle seemed far too low, but then I realised it had gone right round the scale past 35psi and was now at the beginning again
I closed down normally and purged the torch and hoses leaving the regulators relaxed as I normally do, then stopped shaking and reckoned I'd been VERY lucky !!!
What pressure does acetylene self detonate - I was always led to believe it goes bang at about 15psi when not dissolved.
Obviously the regulator is letting by and a replacement has just been ordered.
