Keep an eye on Lithgows auctions at Stokesley, on tool sale days there are often a couple of towers going, But don't forget to factor in the commission and vat as this will increase the hammer price by about 20% to 25%

If it's just domestic use then most health and safety stuff doesn't really apply
How high do you need?
There's a company called quickfit scaffold towers in Bradford/Shipley, they manufacture steel towers
They have a "diy" grade system where you can get a 4ft square tower with about 20ft working height for around £100+vat (excludes the boards)
I bought one a year or so back, very very handy bit of kit, and I have bought loads of extras since : more boards to make 2 smaller towers, casters for the legs, adjustable height legs, extra frames for more height, etc

Thanks for the info so far; I was thinking of an alloy tower so it'd be easier to handle by myself. On the other hand a couple of hundred quid to put two towers up would be reasonable.
Last time I hired two and had a walkway betwen them, made guttering a sight easier (it was cast iron guttering!).
Gordon, I always miss auction bargains, usually 'cos I can never get the time off to go to them. Otherwise the bidding goes silly (like on Ebay) as there'll always be some trade user who's prepared to pay more because they can recoup it in service.

Might be worth looking at buying ex hire. We use Speedy and can buy a second hand tower for the same amount as a weeks hire at general public rates. The last one we bought was virtually all brand new stuff.
We never hire it, and as a result have loads of it kicking about. If we were to sell it on ebay, we would be making a nice proffit.

I paid £100 for a 4ftsq /20ft high tower - well used, no feet or supports or boards - the ladder section stuff. I thought it was quite cheep. Should have asked on here!
