Saw blade bushes

Hello again wise and diversely experienced forumites, I'm looking for some bushes to fit TCT saw blades to a strimmer. They're called saw blade bushes and there are a ton on ebay if I don't mind paying a couple of quid for what is effectively a flat washer plus between 7 and 79 quid postage (or 4 quid on the slow boat from China).

I thought it might be cheaper and easier to order off German ebay since postage will be cheaper and stuff arrives quicker and more reliably from German ebay than from UK or China.

So my question is, what's the German for "saw blade bush" so I can try a search? I do have friends who speak German (hell, I used te speak a little Zuri Deutche before I began the struggle to get to grips with Portuguese) but none of them are of a technical or engineering bent.

The ones I'm after are 30mm to 1" (25.4mm).

Another common English term is 'saw blade reducing ring', so that might also help you.

Don’t take this the wrong way , but what you are asking is the exact basis for health and safety …. There is a bloody good reason why certain blades have certain size holes , correct blades can be fitted to certain machines .

It is common for blades to come with reducers to fit various machines of the correct catergory .

Fitting a wood blade / chop saw / circ blade to a piece of garden machinery is just daft .

Sorry if this seems a moan / rant … but go and ask A&E what they think of doing that .

Ah yes, saw blade reducing ring would find em too. Don't mind them being made of Chineesium, just it is much quicker and more likely to arrive if sent from Germany.

Ah, yes of course, I meant to add a disclaimer. We'll be using them for cutting hay. They seem to be the most effective way of doing that with a strimmer.

I was dubious myself but my friend Antonio has been doing it like that for years without issue (except people losing the bushes when swapping blades/heads). They are run at low revs for hay cutting, probably far slower than they would on a circular saw. I have no idea what the max speed for these blades is but whatever it is these blades are all rusty ones he brought back from France when he was working there years ago and then carefully stored in a damp barn.

Maybe someone knows what the max speed for a TCT blade is and the max speed for a brushcutter disc. None of mine say, nor does the sleeve for the one I have that is still new.

Exactly. At the moment I don't have anywhere to keep a lathe. I was considering gerry rigging up something with a drill and grinder.

brushcutters run a lot slower than tct blades on chop or table saws and not a problem using them . you can buy them to fit strimmers

I remember the day a filipino deck hand asked me to make a reducing bush for a 10" carbide tipped saw blade.

So I did, but was later horrified to see the blade mounted in a guardless 9" angle grinder 'for chipping rust and paint off the deck, sir'.

Needless to say the blade was removed, the adaptor thrown over the side of the ship, the guard put back on the grinder and everybody survived.

There are plenty of variations of true blades for strimmers / brush cutters . Not all strimmers are man enough to spin a metal blade and use plastic versions , my Still FS55 uses a plastic version but my Caster will run metal blades , from a simple 3 point to what looks like a 40 point blade , but not TCT , and to be honest with a tct tooth , if you should hit something and break off a number of teeth , it will become unbalanced .

It takes quiet an engine to spin up and maintain a metal blade , and wouldn’t take much to kill a lesser machine . Proper blades can be had for £10 upwards .

I only comment after my partner came home from work ( hosp) with a nice story of a bloke blatantly being a prize nugget fitting a 150mm circular saw blade in a 4” grinder … once things become unbalanced it goes down hill rapidly .

As for my scary , worked with a bloke who shimmed a 300mm chop saw blade into a stone saw to cut sleepers , that was just scary to watch , and never want to see it again .

If you are trying to fit metal blades to a strimmer you should really be looking at using a brushcutter which is the proper tool for the job.

I have a few of various designs but Antonio's TCT blades have fewer teeth with a nice hooked profile, are far more effective, cut better and don't need sharpening all the time. For hay they are superb because they leave it long and untangled.

If you are trying to fit metal blades to a strimmer you should really be looking at using a brushcutter which is the proper tool for the job.

Yeah, strimmer is a lazy generalisation. I'm using a 43cc Chinese and 45cc Kawasaki brushcutters. Antonio's is a 45cc stil, I think.

I know you are concerned for his well being, but some of the things above are not well thought through. The whole point of plastic blades is that if they do hit something, the consequences are less serious than if a metal blade hits the same something. So it is not really an issue of machine size but of environment where you are cutting, nature of stuff being cut and market into which the machine is aimed.

You can think of a metal blade like a flywheel: the extra mass will help it maintain speed as it passes through the material. That can only be beneficial on a smaller machine.

Grinders run at circa 13000 rpm at 4" diameter. It is the combination of 50% diameter increase and 100% speed increase (TS55 runs at 5800rpm for similar diameter) that has caused the problem here. The saw blade on the brush cutter will be of very similar diameter to the proper item and will, as others have said be running at a very similar speed.

Just buy the proper blade, but unless you have a particularly big strimmer it won't have the grunt.
