saw bench

was given a sawbench to use the motor for another project its a half decent saw with a sharp carbide blade and its accurate. the only thing knacked was the 2 handwheels for rise fall and tilt .its 2 good to scrap and a handy size. looked on ebay for new handwheels prices around 25 quid then I noticed some from china 8 quid for 2 just my price . they came in 2 weeks and are well made and substantial next thing is make a couple of reducing bushes and fit them

Not seen one like that before, is it direct drive?
I have a couple of direct drive 12" table saws that are brilliant but I used to have a 10" bench saw that had a brushed direct drive motor and the noise was horrendous.

I got a table saw from B&Q (one of their performance pro jobbies) around 15 years ago - still going great, but the guard gave out 12.1 months after I bought it.

The riven knife is still in place, though, and it does command a lot of respect to use it without the guard.

Alan,
if you think it will fit --- its yours, acquired for one of those projects that will never ever get done. I would much prefer you had a crown guard and knife fitted somehow.( I may have a larger one for 12" blade--somewhere not too sure where)

Will need an address as I`ll never be down, well I will be down the A19 on Thurs 11th Aug on my way to Biggleswade but I can foresee meeting arrangements being complicated.

I have used Saws since July 1961, really,NO GUARD--- you would be quite foolish to use a circular saw with out a riving knife or crown guard. I do admit to running rebates out without the guard but it really is a big NO NO NO.

I tend not to use guards on circular saws but I always have a riving knife fitted, especially for ripping and always lower the blade so it only just protrudes through the material.

Probably `Cause you have never had a warning, either from your employer or The HSE or local council Factory inspector and I guess you have never ever seen a very, very serious accident and probably don't use push sticks. If you had been in my workshop and I caught you with a guard off Id have given you your P45. simple as that. I have seen more than my fair share of serious accidents with woodworking equipment, majority of accidents are caused they don't just happen.

I allways remember my mate using a large hand saw he held wood in one hand and cut wood mid air with other . when the guard went over blade he rested on his leg and got another piece and cut trouble was the blade was astill running and the guard was stuck open and cut his leg to the bone . I saw it happen and after fory five years still makes my bum nip thinking about it and makes me very wary of planes and saws .electric hand saws are quite dangerous for me as I'm left handed so tend to hold the saw in front of me rather than to one side where the saw can run backwards if it grips and flies past u

I certainly appreciate the risks of using circular saws, my wife's grandfather managed to saw the tops of both thumbs of on two separate occasions, both times a guard would not have stopped this although a sharp blade would have.
On another occasion I watched an old boy slip and plane the majority of his palm and wrist off on a fully guarded planer/edger. My theory, based on only 35 years of safe experience of woodworking machinery is that you are more cautious of unguarded bladed than you are of guarded.
Likewise if I employed someone then I would comply with the HSE regs but as I am only concerned with myself I prefer common sense moderated with a degree of caution.
I use spindle blocks without safety pins and have also used single cutter blocks roughly balanced but I surround the cutter blocks in guards in the eventuality that a blade let's go although it's never happened.
