should have posted on here you would have had a line of people queing up and tip you a few quid for mechines at scrap prices even double scrap and still give a tip

I just turned up after doing a delivery to see the skip full of good stuff buried under the normal offcuts, I'm not really in a position in work to have a say

At the academy (School) where i work the "sevice" provider's company policy is to scrap everything under their control. No exceptions. When the old school closed the D&T dept staff were given just two days to move what they wanted across.
The result of this was two Harrison 140's, three Colchester Bantams & four Boxfords plus half a dozen Meddings drills, Graduate wood lathes, saws, & 90% of all the contents of a typical well kitted out workshop of the time were all literally ripped from the floor by diggers & crunched straight into scrap skips.
What was provided in its place was cheap chinese junk unfit for purpose.
This is the reality of our modern system.

My experience was that if a low quality item could be purchased, it would be, over an older "unknown" unit, as then the responsibility could be passed over to whoever sold the cheap replacement.

Ie if somehow somone got their arm chopped off, there would be somone external who's fault it would be (or at least the option to claim "we have taken every precaution")

...whilst with older kit, there's noone else issuing a certificate saying "this is fit for purpose" - it has to be done internally, and hence the responsibility is that much greater.

In short, it was all about outsourcing risk, rather than anything to do with the actual machine.

I'll get back to the group and any interested parties on the Rapidor saw, we are on half-term now but it won't be going anywhere.

If anyone is interested in the Rapidor a message would be handy, haven't a clue as to its value.

Trouble is if they let it go to someone, someone else will complain, someone will ask what payment was made, someone will start talking backhanders and the whole thing will escalate. Sometimes it's just not worth the hassle factor and the easiest option is just to say no.

I understand where they are coming from and am quite happy our Engineering guys will sign my scrap chit if I dig anything useful out of the skip!

Of course if anyone is chucking out a powered hacksaw I would be interested too, but Scotland is a bit far unless it's a bike trip and I'm not strapping one of those to the back of the XT

rescued this from a plastic crate half full of water in the spring, it'll clean up ok .

Now that's a proper bench grinder, well saved there Tangledfeet, someone should want the hacksaw, a true rebuild project...

It's in mint condition; I'd love to know how old it is. Also have the matching pedestal for it with switchgear. Unfortunately it's a 7" grinder and I'll be fitting £200 worth of 8" CBN wheels (for sharpening woodturning tools) so I'll be ditching all the guards unfortunately - I've measured and they won't fit.

Haven't decided yet how to power it; might treat it to it's own inverter or come up with a way of sharing/switching from the Union pillar drill (also saved from the scrapyard) that I fitted with one last year.

That has occured to me... it isn't just width as CBN wheels are (well, the ones I want) 40mm wide. It would be nice to preserve as much of the original grinder as possible.

Come on. man - it's a welding forum..... If originally bothers you, buy a couple of spare guards and perform the surgery on those.
