Satisfying little jobs

Finally got the kitchen back together and dragged the Hapstone knife sharpening rig out the garage to sort out the neglected kitchen knives and a few others. Well over a year since they were last given any love and it showed despite them being quality knives.

Setup in the kitchen, music on, angles set with gauge and set about restoring the edges. Careful repetitive strokes through the different grades until the edge was back, evenly done from the point to the heel, not mirror finish as these are working knives. So satisfying and relaxing with the knives a joy to use as a result ready for Sunday lunch.

Every time I sharpen my knives I wish I had done them sooner, makes mincing garlic and onions a much less tedious and eye watering task.

I probably sharpen my kitchen knife too often. I can’t resist it because I love the feel of it slicing through the veg.

I loved lapping in valves by hand, always found it to be relaxing if you had a decent sucker. I’ve used various lapping tools/machines over the years but still prefer a sucker on a stick

Always hated doing the silicone. I bought various tools, wet fingers etc and it looked like a 5 year old had done it. This year doing the kitchen and I bought some Bedec profiles and got great results, I nearly had a little dance afterwards. Now I actually want to remove and redo the bathroom silicone.

A mate of mine blunts the kitchen knives, reckons his wife is a disaster area with sharp ones, I always keep Mrs C’s as sharp as possible, I always joke that if she is going to run me through, I want them sharp & quick as possible, I don’t want her hacking & stabbing me to finish the job! She loves them sharp & soon tells me if I’ve neglected them.

My technique is masking tape either side of the seam and not put too much into it. I know what you mean though!

I always used the wet finger trick, but more often than not it looked like i had used my shoe to smooth it off.

A dude on site showed me the trick with the stick, and have different sized sticks. Get it as near as you can out of the gun then give is a spray and tool it off with the stick. A proper fillet lasts a long time, smoothing it to a feather edge with a finger/shoe means it has a really thin edge and soon starts to peel.

Spraying the black waxoyl under my cars and injecting the cills with preservation wax. It usually marks the end of 100's of hours of welding and looks like a finished car underneath at last. I like the waxoyl smell too for the first few months after for the samd reason it marks a significant milestone in a restoration.
