My small R & A was painted Hammerite blue by the previous owner - can't say it's a colour I would have chosen, but there you go. This is when I brought it home first, and yes...I know the chuck key shouldn't live there

The Gearbox drives the leadscrew, which is also missing. This drives the cutting head along enabling the cut to be "automatic", moving the crossslide along. The gears control the speed of the leadscrew relative to the spindle speed. thus giving a fixed cutting rate. The rate can be altered to give the desired pitch if a thread and therefore you can cut a thread on the workpiece.
Double boost did some this week one his sunday nightcap (102)

One thing you could do for a project would be convert it to CNC

you'll manage fine without the gearbox, I havn't used power feed on mine for the last 20 years and have done thread cutting once every few years when I havn't had a suitable tap or die.

I know it's not the tidiest lathe in the world but for whatever I'll use it for (hmmm... what is that?) I hope it will be fine.

Looks Great Skot, get yourself some paragon paints enamel, I bought this lathe a couple of months back and have repainted it in their 'boxford smoke grey', brush applied it flows out to leave a nice finish and is resistant to most oils etc,

That lathe is 300KG, It's top heavy and the weight is all at one end. You will need three people in total to move it safely and without risking damage. I bought one earlier this year. Hope you are prepared to get it shifted. I did it with the help of the vendor, dismantled it with an engine crane but I wouldn't recommend it. Four of us put it back together but we could have managed with three.

Power feed is a nice thing on these lathes to help give a good finish especially if there is a bit of wear as it keeps things nice and even.

I was actually negotiating with seller to buy the four jaw chuck earlier this week when there were no bids. He seemed a nice guy, I only didn't get it because some dreamer finally put a bid in on the lathe

Hope you enjoy it. I haven't used mine too much. I need a new chuck/backplate with less run out on it. I am hoping it is just worn chuck jaws.

Cheers for that - yeah I was assuming it would be heading on to half a ton. The plan is for me to arrive with my pickup (500KG limit in the bed), some spanners, a bunch of chunks of wood, a wood saw and lots of ratchet straps.
Edit: oh, and some chunks of sawn pipe for use as rollers to get it down the bed.

The seller has it in a garage so it shouldn't be a problem getting it in with his hoist after we take it off the stand.

Then an engine hoist and a couple of mates at this end.

It was a horrible blue when I bought it, probably why I was the only bidder

Oh, also, I/we used bits of round fencepost as rollers - works just as well as metal pipe, is more forgiving of slightly uneven surfaces (less likely to snag in paving joins etc.) and less likely to damage paint/metal.

Not that I had to worry about the paint damage bit...

That's a thought - will have a look around at the weekend!

i bet hes trying to find a nice place for it before collecting it but just maybe its a little more heavy than thought it might have been so might have fun getting it out of the van never mind off the van
