Should also point out the only issue this engine had prior to this work was burning oil faster than petrol. Yes after inspection pistons skirts were slightly worn, cam was slightly worn, rockers weren't great but still usable. After properly inspecting the block, crank etc., it seemed pointless to put in known slightly worn components after spending a fair chunk machining.

Check em for straightness and burring on the shaft and ends. I wouldnt put new cam bearings in without a line boring but thats the way I was shown.

The cam bushes fitted were "Finished" type Bushes, and checked with the cam for alignment.
(I had no input beyond ordering the materials mind )

Calling the experts: @FridgeFreezer, @elbekko, @Bowie69, @Gazzar and many others I may have forgotten.

Before I put the intake plenum back on I'm seriously considering drilling out this water port (with the bolt in it) to accommodate another temperature sender. The black one is currently used by the ECU and is the factory P38 one I would assume. I've confirmed it's an M12x1.5 thread, there is just enough meat to tap the other out to M12x1.5 as well.



What I would like is to be able to install a sender for the factory temperature gauge as below. I've pulled the binnacle off and there appears to be a C stamped on the back of it (along with smiths etc) which may or may not mean anything.



Soooo... Being a Stage 1V8 from factory I'm working on the assumption that a V8 sender (which I think are all the same curve) would work?

Short of rigging up some boiling water and thermocouples does anyone have any insights into a ideally off the shelf LR sender that would work with the gauge?

Bear in mind the ECU one can be swapped out as I can calibrate that in TunerStudio.

Well I decided as I could still get a vacuum hose around the corner to under the water port via the thermostat housing I'd stop messing about



Looking dangerously like I should put it back in the vehicle tomorrow but in reality I'd like to tidy up (tape it and wrap it in conduit) the wiring harness whilst it's all nice and accessible.

Plenty of RTV around the intake plenum as @Bowie69 showed how difficult these are to seal up. Multiple times around the bolts until they were all tight.

I know bugger all about Land Rover V8's but I'd fit a digital or decent accurate analogue gauge as well. The old Surf's can overheat and you won't know until it's too late as the useless factory gauge sits at just under the middle untill it's well over 100°.

With my escapades recently with the 300Tdi in the Defender I'm definitely going to try and fit a Tdi header tank in with the low coolant sensor. That has been far more valuable than the temperature gauge as it'll catch a problem way before the temp gauge does as you say.

I do have the option of a digital gauge read off the ECU as I've been messing about with LVGL recently.
