Uncomfortable in the middle, dangerous at both ends. And expensive.
I forgot to add, and everything smells of horse wee... theres just a whiff on the boots, coats and anything else that goes near them...

I've noticed that when Mrs Robo gets in the car, she's "nose blind" to it after 30 odd years of owning them.

Ka boom, all torn down. Bit of a pain to do as I didn't have any bolts long enough to go in the engine stand so did it from the pallet or suspended slightly dubiously from the engine crane.
Oil rings weren't coked up as Adam had on that Merc V6 so I think combination of 100k engine, rings and thin oil is the culprit.
Tearing it down the rod side of the big end bearings are pretty worn (bronze showing in the centre) so this was definitely the right call, no major marks that I spotted (wasn't particularly looking for them though as I just wanted to get it stripped down so I can take it up tomorrow).

It didn't look horrendous last time I checked. I mean the engine was running well just burning oil. A friend who's far more familiar with Rover V8s than I was also massively impressed with how quickly it picked up and responded to the throttle pedal whilst we were messing about so it can't be too bad.
Adam will check the cam and crank for wear anyway.

I hyad the EFi version of the 3.5 in my SD1 Vitesse a few years back and did a bit of a refresh at 96k. All it needed was a set of shells and rings. It went on to 195k in my ownership and 225k the last I heard of it, without further incident.Ka boom, all torn down. Fully aware of that, hence the chat with Adam beforehand. Fundamentally I'm fed up of chasing tired engines so whatever it takes to sort this one into a completely fresh engine will be done. The bores need a clean up and hone at the very minimum but they'll be measured and checked first.

Took the block, crank, cam and pistons and dropped them off at the machine shop.
Conclusion is new cam & lifters, new cam bearings, new mains, new big end, at least new rings. We don't know yet whether it'll get away with just a hone or whether we'll need a bore. Probably going to end up with a small grind of the crank too. It might polish out but we're doubtful.
The oil burning was put down to basically a tired old engine. I think it was Adam's Dad (who started the business) who was there as well and he reckons at some point it may have been a bit low on oil due to the way some of the mains had worn.
Been chatting with @FridgeFreezer and @Bowie69 about cams and given the price difference I'll probably stick with an OEM cam given the work that's likely to happen.

Thanks for the offer but knowing the 110s 300Tdi is tired, the L322 is just a bit of a pain to keep running nicely (more bushes etc) I'm basically after a brand new 0 miles engine and be done with it.
The chassis is sorted on the 6x6, the back is well just solid aluminium so largely irrelevant. Engine will be completely rebuilt now and the cab there's not much to it to sort but it's solid too. Hopefully once engine is in then everything else will be easy to sort and get up to 100%.
