You can do but mostly from what I can tell, have a locked centre diff and blank the rear output off and then flip the front diff to reverse the drive side.
. The bus box I have should take it without an issue - it's a 700kg car at the most. If it doesn't I would go for a [insert Phil M's recommendation here!]
You say that, but we blew a built up 'bus box with a 2.1L VW engine
5mins in Harley powered sand rail no worry about cooling
G50 is the way to go, have messed with these and they are tough.

I had one to put in but they're a bit of a bulky box length-wise, and the diff ratio isn't anywhere near low enough for proper off-road tyres. Stuck a Renault UN5 in instead.
Swapped the Mazda rotary out for a supercharged S2000 motor. There's a thread on here but unfortunately the photobucket 3rd party thing killed a lot of my logs, I'm trying to redo them slowly. There's a thread on RetroRides though.
It goes on the dyno for mapping next month, at last.
To join the engine up to the 002 VW Micro-bus (said with an Arlo Guthrie accent) I intend to create "Frankenbox"
Helpfully the 002 box splits at the section that houses the clutch. VW box on the left, clutch housing in the background. Input shaft is removable.
Hopefully I can find a CAD drawing of the VW 002 box end.
