aldi or lidl do a half decent grinder with speed control every now and again

they sell the velcro discs at the same time

yeah, thats the flap disc's I was talking about,
Never used one befor, are they any good????

As to the other kind (hard plastic back disc, with a sand paper disc normaly tightened down on to the hard back)
I have used them and found them to be good.
my only problem that I get is if it catches the outer edge!!! a big chunk can fly off the sand papper part

I use fibre backed discs to blend in tig welds on tubing...around 120 grit
I usually use them without a backing pad so they bend around the tube a bit.
The fibre backed discs are a bit stronger than the paper ones but are still prone to flying apart if they catch an edge or are pushed a bit too hard.

i remember when i first used an Aluminium Oxide Flap Disc, it just ate the metal, it leaves all the other disc's standing imo

The discs to use with a backing pad on an angle grinder are not paper backed they are alox fibre discs. I bought a load on ebay dirt cheap and they last ages, I'm still ploughing through them 4 years later. They are 80 grit and fetch weld down and leave a decent finish. They work out a lot cheaper than flap discs even with the cost of a backing pad.

Both are great, the blurb at the top of the Klingspor link pretty much sums things up... flap discs are a kinda jack of all trades and as they wear fresh abrasive is uncovered which is one of the drawbacks of fibre discs. Fibre disc on a backing pad is more accurate for final blending on flat surfaces as the amount of 'give' is more controllable. I've normally got one angle grinder permantly wearing a backing pad

There are also flap discs with even more give to them than those in the Klingspor link, Garryson call theirs Flexidiscs. Dronco do a non-woven version alongside their 'polishing' flap discs- these things don't remove material so much as clean it leaving a random grained/satin finish

Avoid 'cheapo' versions of either as 1/ they're rarely actually any cheaper and 2/ typically cost more even when they are 'cheaper' as they wear out quicker (or in the case of silverline tat shed all their abrasive pretty much immediately they touch anything)

Just a little tip though,for the backing pad spend the money and get the nylon one's something like this

The cheap rubber ones are ok for light work but the centers tend to go on them alot through heat

I have a regular job which involves bevelling the edges of 6mm 316 stainless flat at 45 degrees - i.e. quite a lot of metal to remove. I've take to using these ceramic discs which seem very good. Once the bevelling is done I use the zirconium disks (as suggested by stalward_hmlc) with a backing pad to get smooth and flat faces of the material.

the job I am doing at the mo, is trying to remove the slag thats left on steel.
I was lucky enough to bag a MEGA 20 tonne press on ebay for just £150

It came in a yellow and gray colour!!!!!!!!!!! yuk.
originaly the whole press was yellow!!!!!!
anyway ALL the paint scraped of a little to easly, only to reveal that the base metal was not cleaned at all well in not at all.

want to go over it to key the metal befor i stick a coat or three of paint on her
