Sandblasting

Can some one please give me advice

I need to purchase equipment to sand blast old timbers and stoework.

I have seen sandblasting kits on the internet, sort of red presurised tanks, but i also need to buy a compressor that i can run of a normal 240 volt socket.

Any advice please on what i need

Welcome to the forum.

"old timbers and stonework" sounds like large areas and I think you'll be struggling with the red pots and a 3hp compressor.

I suspect you should be looking at a Hodge-Clemco type pot and a road compressor.

with that limitation a maximum of a 14cfm compressor and a hobby sandblasting pot using a 3mm jet will barely get u away .realy they are no where near big enough for that type of work as said in above post this is realy minimum size 90cfm and pot with 6mm jet

thanks for the info, but please treat me as a complete novice on this type of operation and tell me in simple baic terms what i need to do the job.

I really dont know what cfm's are.

Could you just give me a shopping list, just pretend your sending a 10 year old to asda for the shopping....ha ha

Yes but then you'd need a few thousand quid to buy the equipment, are you prepared to do that???

May be cheaper to get a few quotes in from people that do this as a living

Without knowing better what you want to do it very hard to say. Simply the red pressure pots off eBay are for smaller tasks and the volume of air needed to do the job is very large i have just finished blasting the old paint of the ear tub for a landrover (short wheel base) and its probily taken 10 hours and has been a long process

Print off the picture above, take to Asda and ask for one of the big yellow things and one of the big red things sorry I just had to do it

CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) is a way of measuring how fast a given volume of air is delivered, you will need a lot for the process you are considering hence the reference to a road compressor and a big blast pot.

But mind you, How nice a rear axle looks from a '69 series 2, once its been sandblasted

I am sorry shaunfox, but when I start looking into something I have no knowledge of, the first thing I do is find out as much as possible in order to arm myself with, at least, the basics. Still miss some things of course, tip size for one.

Last month I had not picked up a welder but with research, you find out what you need to know, what the jargon refers to, and what it is you need to accomplish the task you have set yourself.

The only ten year old I would send to ASDA would be a Japanese, since they seem to start when they are five. Most ten year olds will pinch your cash anyway.

We all need help every now and then, but a little research will do YOU a world of good.

Also add on the cost of a good blasting helmet (£200 +), filter and factor in the extra air required to supply it.

what size pot and size compressor that is needed for doing certain tasks is not redily available . so even researching wont turn up much . firms who do it for a living wont tell u anything . i made my first lot of gear 30 years ago by bunging someone at a shotblast gear hire firm 100 quid getting all the measurments and info along with blast hose and jet the pots are home made and the mobile comp was bought for 150 quid a clemco mini pot of simlar size would cost £1ooo and blast helmet 250 quid
