I've decided to start a new project, a sand rail!
For anyone that doesn't know, a sand rail is a kit car built on the chassis of a classic beetle. They don't need an IVA test.
I've chosen a super beetle chassis as it has independent rear suspension and coil springs up front.
Its not in the best condition, but fundamentally solid. I'll certainly need to replace the sills, and probably the floor pans too. Rather than use pattern parts, I'm planning on using 50x50 box section, and sheet steel if needed.
First steps are to disassemble, remove rust, replace sills, and brush paint in 2k primer/top coat. Then replace all bushes and reassemble.
Once I have a solid rust free chassis I'll source an engine. I'm leaning towards a Focus st170 engine. They're pretty solid and can be picked up for around £300 fully dressed, with ecu, loom, keys etc.
I've attached a few pics of the current state, and what I hope to achieve!
