Lane is a mile long and council won't help other than supplying us with the spreader and salt.Use a bucket & hand scoop for spreading the grit. It's quicker & easier than fannying around with those spreaders.
They have been around for years..had them on kids trikes in the 60,s to keep the back wheels onStar lock dome buttons they are.

Yes you're right, there's another part not in the photos that goes inside the flanged part, it's now installed on the outside of the frame and can't move out of position. What stops your reverse flanged bush from wandering along the axle?
I would have thought the flange would be to the outside, between wheel and frame, with either an exle length, or suitable spacers, to keep the wheel up to it so it keeps it in the frame? And a good tight fit in the frame so it doesn't rotate in the frame.
I've had several wheeled items where that has happened .I've just taken delivery of a small salt spreader for our lane but have discovered the flanged plastic bearing for the axle has been fitted round the wrong way.
The flange looks like it should be this side of the frame.

I need to remove these 'dome nuts'?

Any ideas without damaging them?
This might speed things up a bit if the initial spreader get's old.I've currently got a couple of pry bars under it and it's coming off but I think it'll be knackered by then.

We normally do it with shovels out the back of my truck but it's wasteful if you're not careful.
We had a spreader somewhere, Agri-fab. Plastic thing. Just spread the seed, fertiliser or grit wherever it wanted and made a right mess.Well it lasted about 10 minutes then the gearbox failed. Brand new and utter rubbish.

The old farm fertilizer / guano spreaders bucket was often used to broad cast grains & grass seed it fitted on a leather front facing shoulder harness . I used to watch dad do left hand grab out the bucket .. whilst his right hand slung seeds and salt etc then move to lh sling . rh grab . At the edge of a field he would use the grab handle with the off side hand . Dad & the small farm owner did that for hours at a time , till one day there was enough money for a crop duster hire which did the 100 acres in an hour or less. We thought it was fantastic to get a shower of Fison's fertilizer pellets from the dusting aircraft as it passed overhead . Watching it land , refill and take off again some 1/2 mile away was about as exciting as it could be for a 6 yr old lad .Told you so. They're sh*te. Bucket & scoop. Honestly. Once you find your technique, it's a bloody good method for grit spreading. You can fit approx. 15kg in a builders bucket.
You also need to remember that you don't need to put shedloads down. A good even spread is far more beneficial than mounds of it. Around 30 to 40 grammes per square metre is all you need to be aiming for.
