Salop Trailer

Once again I got bored the other week so I thought I would make a start on restoring our little salop 2 tonne tipper trailer from the 50's whilst the world cup is on, heres a pic of it 2 weeks ago

Originally the wood is american red wood but I have made a new frame from oak with the floor being pine and it all being creosoted , so it should outlast my lifetime

I will post more photos off my camara tonight when the footy is finished

Heres the basic oak frame of the trailer

This picture shows the top being pinned together to the bottom part

Next I took all the metal work off the old wood, and started grinding the rust off first, then usinf a rotary brush to shine it up

Then I painted the metal with hammerite black paint which will be te same colour as the wheels

Next I creosoted te oak late thursday night, an by the morning in had soaked into the oak and then I bolted some of meatl onto the frame

Next is a photo of the wheels which show the trailer off, they read The Salop trailer co, makers Shrewbury and as I only live 1o iles from shrewsbury they have abit of heritage about them

Thats as far as Ive got sofar, today started putting the first coat of paint onto the wheels and more coats tomorrow

I rather like the little trailer; it is younger than I am, and in slightly better condition. Your hairy foreman must have found a defect in the jacking arrangement, because he seems to have come away looking displeased about something.

Have you any idea why the chassis cross-member was pierced? Surely not for weight-saving, on an implement like this. Another fascinating detail is the way the chassis side rails change from deep section to shallower section near the front. That curved transition must have been expensive to manufacture. It would certainly avoid the stress concentration associated with a sudden change of section, but a long taper would have been easier to make. Most agricultural trailers of that era had simple chassis made of heavy channel. Would these early Salop ones have been based on an ex-WD chassis?

The hydraulic tipping system reminds me that in the early 1950s our neighbour used a screw-tip grain trailer; a cross shaft at the front of the chassis had handles at each side, so that two folk could turn them to operate the tipping mechanism in those pre-hydraulic days. Oh, the days of wooden ships and iron men!

Anyway, the trailer will go nicely with the Dexta. Look forward to seeing pictures of the finished article.

To be onest mate I dont know anything about them, my grandad bought it at an auction 40 years ago and it was pretty rough then, so Im just replacing anythin rotton and tidying up the metal work.

It will probably be used as a fencing trailer or logging trailer but I will try and keep it tidy and it will be barn stored for the rest of its life

well its been a busy few days been getting up early to work on the trailer then watch the footy till the evening then back on the trailer heres a few pics of wat im up too now

3 days of grinding the frame and wirebrushing then fianlly wiping the metal with thinners to really clean it up so now its had 2 coats of grey primer

then this afternoon had to bring it in the shed cos its too windy and just luckily as we put it in it started to rain

and during the week I painted up the wheels and got 2 new tyres fitted with new inner tubes costing £240!!

so just a few coats of blue to put on and align the frame up with the wooden frame fit new ram and then finished so more pics to follow hopefully by saturday

hard work cleaning that down with grinder and wire brush the paint must be thick stuff as u have taken the spray gun strait of the comp tank 125 psi ??bet there was some overspray there

1 litre of paint onto trailer 2 litres into atmosphere

nice job but you really do need a regulator and a water filter otherwise you will be spraying water onto the chassis aswell as paint so will start to rust quicker again

Ive got a proper pipe for the compressor but theyve got the wrong fittings on them and I didn't have time to go to town for new ones, but my gun has got an adjustor on it so I kept air flow down to a minimum and to be fair not much paint was wasted, Ive also seen how you elimate water from the air on other threads and It went straight over my head can someone tell me a simpler way of eliminating moisture from the tank thank you

I like it. What with the price of scrap at the moment I've seen a fair bit of old machinery go past the house recently, on the back of farmers trailers off to be weighed in. That would otherwise still be sat in the corner of a field. Sad to see, but then I guess they had no intention of restoring it.

Theres a place in Oswestry called 'Morgans' who sell almost everything for diyers if they haven't got it then nowone has so I measured the wooden frame on the trailer and rung them up and gave them the measurments and they where 6 weeks late delivering it but when it came it was all cut with about an inch on each end spare, but I was expecting long 20ft pices that I would cut myself so at least It only took me day to pin it all together

also just give the first coat of blue on the trailer and looks good, how many coats do u reckomend for a metal frame, its had 2 coats of grey primer and now 1 coat of blue

Ok since my last week there been alot of progress:

made up new doors

Put new ram on with new pipes

Put floor in today

Looks a very nice restoration.

Are those alloy wheels on the trailer?

yes they are alloy, I just wirebrushed them and cleaned them before painting
