using emery cloth to polish on a lathe or using it in such a nonchalant and over reaching way with it wrapped around?

I can see why.. But how else would it be done? defo made me think twice about stopping a Fan with my hand, be it on the shaft or directly against the outer face..

he looks as if he might be a vocational school student during a training period... I think the old guys should have had an eye on him... judging by how fast they got to him (at least one of them), they must have seen what was going on well before it happened.

Not really the emery that was the issue, where he put his hands with long sleeves on damned well was though.

I'd be thinking all of the above. Using abrasives over uncovered ways is bad practice, and that lad was asking for an accident to happen with his lacksadaisical attitude.

apart from the bed wasnt covered ive taped some metal once in the lathe with finger and thumb it got hold and pulled my thumb in and squashed my nail it was black and blue . only ever the once

One of the turners I worked with at a firm had a head full of metal plates (he was wearing a scarf or a tye one day cant remember) I am glad to say I wasn't there it was years previous to my arrival as a teenager but made me think. The guys said he still had to have regular visits to a shrink over it, genuine they were not pulling my leg his head was a pretty odd shape!

This is a good example of no Common Sense. I've come to the belief this is endemic, in the main to the lack of care or thought for what you are doing, and the consequences.

Mate took his boat prop shaft to a big outfit to see if they could machine a new taper. Was called into the machine shop to see that it had a bend. They had mounted it in a lathe with the end to be machined held by a centre in the tailstock. Look says the guy and puts it in gear at a fairly high speed. Being a bit bent, the off centre load sprung it out of the tailstock and across the shop to take a chunk out of the far wall, tapping mate's shoulder in passing. This was only last year, amazing stupidity.
