Safety Glasses... Reccomendations after an A&E visit.

Yeah i handed in my notice 2 days ago. The new place is a small highly technical company in the nuclear supply chain, seems like good management and they're expanding like i say, i will make glasses one of my battles, because i believe in them. Got a few approaches worked out in my head already.

Making change is all about selling. If “they” dont buy it, it will always be an uphill struggle. Better to get the troops thinking its their idea.
So are you working your notice or is it garden leave?

Working notice, got them down from 3 months to 6 weeks. A few weeks off and then start at the new place

I am against a "100% wear policy" - we spend lots of our time doing very low risk tasks - it would be a bit silly to be wearing safety glasses all the while.

I'm a 100% for - people do simply forget.

You don't want to be reminded when something hits your eyeball . . .

No complaints in our place against it - and we are a site full of complainers if there is the slightest thing we can find fault with

I had this argument with a clueless pedantic idiot. Awkward when pedantic idiot is a boss and trying to make a name for himself as he was clueless. Blanket glove policy. Was quite funny when the guy using lathe or trying to use the lathe said Im off tomorrow, if this doesnt get done today, itll have to wait till I come back in 5 weeks.

Same with hard hats/bump caps.

During my recent ill-fated attempt at working in a warehouse it was mandatory to wear company supplied 3M bump caps.

I naturally kept mine when I left and as it had sweat stains on it I stripped it down and put it in the washing machine. Reading the label it came as quite a surprise to see words to the effect of "This cap will not protect the wearer in the event of any impact."

On that basis alone I I wear it solely for where there's a chance of a low impact such as yesterday in the yard when I had to crawl around the trailer under an earth mover to chain it down. Hard hat all the way for me and I use a "proper" one with a 3 point chin strap, not the cheap generic type supplied by work.

Agree 100% with @addjunkie about making it mandatory. Common sense isn't particularly common these days so it's simpler to legislate for the lowest common denominator.

Those bump caps are god awful things. Because of the peak I find I bump my head more than I would’ve done without one on.

Flatly refuse to wear one. Been to a couple of places that have tried. Left them to it.

I don't particularly buy into bump caps, however i found it hard enough to make people wear hard hats when I'd written a RA for moving/falling objects on some specific jobs, so when management made bump caps mandatory, I wasn't too bothered.

The performance standard of a bump cap relates to its ability to protect against headbanging stationery objects, not moving ones.

In the mid eighties I was on 120000 ton ship, at a guess it was about 100 feet from the economiser in the funnel tothe bottom plates of the engine room. A 1”diameter pry bar/ chisel thing was dropped by accident. When retrieved from the bottom plates there was actually quite a dent where it hit. Dont think a hard hat or bump cap would have done any good at all.

On our site there's supposed to be multiple precautions to mitigate this, working at a height over 3m you are tools should be tied off , mandatory hard hats as well as an area underneath the high work or lifting cordoned off to stop people from walking in without your permission.

Exactly! Could I get the HR people (not H&S) instigating this to see that . . . all the machines we build, rotate . . .

I also questioned why I was allowed to use pen and paper in the office, totally unprotected, but the same pen and the same pad on the shop floor required me to wear gloves . . .

Eventually changed to "when the task demands it" rather than a blanket policy.

To be fair, it has reduced the number of incidents of damage to hands and fingers being reported.

But the M10 nut that bounced off your hat the day before would have put a nice dent in your head without a hard hat.

Bump caps are very useful crawling around under stuff in a kneeling position. Or some clown of a designer has put stuff at just the right height . . . .

I bought a pair of the bolle safety glasses with a foam seal and strap. They are brilliant and I will use them a lot but under my welding helmet I will stick with my swimming goggles. They provide an even better seal. The thought of one of those glowing little BBs whizzing into my eyes fills me with dread.

I honestly don't know why I didn't do it sooner. Spent years getting **** in my eyes even with safety specs on. Not anymore... Spent a whole day cutting and grinding today without having to rub my eyes once!

A place I was working was doing some major renovations and most of the site became a hard hat zone , someone was saying they were going to make chin strapped ones compulsory for any elevated work. The number of times mine had almost slipped off my head when I looked over the high up in the air maintenance catwalks I could kinda see the point

Bump caps are useful when in low headroom situations like inverts, tunnels, sewers. Not much need for the extra impact protection of a full hard hat but enough protection to stop you dinging your noggin on the roof. Plus if you bump your head on the soffit with a regular hard hat it tends to roll off backwards/sideways and then the strap digs into your flesh.
