I assume if the nozzle was changed to a conventional one and air regulated it would not mist but become a small white water type flow?

It really isnt. Not good at all to be creating an aerosol using a misting system unless you have a full machine enclosure and extraction.

We enforce very hard on this as its a massive cause of a type of occupational asthma

Looks like experimenting to adapt the nozzle to stop it misting and just produce flow.

Anyone know of a source of Flexi arm to fit an extraction hood/collector to capture the smoke.


I use one of these with a 3D printed phone adapter to watch you tube in bed. I am guessing it's the best I am going to get for the price.
Just wondered if a more flexible option was available.

Thinking out loud here but I guess a flexible arm of some description attached to one of these would allow you to move it well out of the way when not in use but be able to be very localised near part when needed.

It seems there isn’t a safe exposure limit for cutting fluids, so what does that mean for a hobyist machinist who infrequently uses cutting fluid? Obviously dipchecking, continuous monitoring mist control systems etc is a bit tough going for a person working out of their shed but equally the fluid could sit there for a very long time gathering bacteria. What are the practical options? I guess avoid if you can, LEV/containment?

So basically the biggest risk is from the bacteria in the water - which would occur with even plain water?
How about a few drops of bleach from time to time?
Although with me it's definitely the oil itself. Even WD40 gets to me now. Never used to. Only since Covid.

My take on it was to not run flood coolant as I didn't use the lathe or mill regularly enough. Now I am retired and will be spending more time in the workshop, I was going to set up a system. I personally have decided against it but with the proper precautions that you mention, you could run a system as many already do.

Is it not possible to really minimise the exposure? Seems like the worst ones are aerosolisation, vaporisation and touching it. If you can flood cool with enough water based fluid, tool temperature should be generally pretty low, especially in our hobby settings where we're probably not working machines at their hardest. What little vaporisation does occur will be at the very tool face which, if it's well flooded, the fresh incoming coolant should more or less recondense the majority. Forget misting. And wear gloves...?

I like the rigid brand threading lube , can smoke a bit if you do real heavy cutting on the lathe.
