Anyone else been through this rig marole? Need it to get a foot in the door on a site i used to work on.

However, I've put down im a limited company with 2 employees buts its asking for H&S qualifications or relevant experience and site inspections or audits carried out.

So do I need to get myself on a H&S course or just put down that we don't get site inspections?

Equipment will be a funny one. Can't remember the last time we had PAT tests carried out. Another penny in the electricians pocket.

Brad we are a worksafe contractor ( SMAS ), its well worth the extra few quid and gaining the accreditation through a third party. I am not saying you are not capable of doing it yourself but its a time consuming malarkey and you will get it in place a lot quicker through an agent. Yeah you need a card, its dead easy to get one. Pat tests are widely abused i have been given pat tested stuff with bare copper cables showing but most places stipulate no electrical stuff without an in date pat test on it and so that happens (i don't nessarily mean the thing was checked correctly just its been tagged).
All of you on it means a day lost but if your going on commercial sites you need a card. A lot will still let you on but for what it is your going to need it.
Unless someone on the team is really stupid your all going to pass

There are two bits to this Brad, the "company" needs to be recognised as a worksafe outfit by most of the bigger players in the construction industry and most ask for SMAS or CHAS. CITB and the like are just personal requirements over and above the companies. From the companies side of things you need to be able to demonstrate you have a H&S policy in place, up to date safety checks/records on all kit eg loler for lifting, RAMS on file, first aiders, insurances, toolbox talks and the list goes on. All of this come under the umbrella of SMAS or CHAS so if you have accreditation your company just gets the green light. Staff qualifications and tickets are just that and wont help the "company" to get on site.

Sounds like a ballache but firms like the one mentioned will get you through, our annual spend with them is about 1K but that does include all the assistance we need throughout the year and use of their online RAMs setup.

• Job specific RAMS for each contract.
• We use the sites lifting equipment so we don’t have to get involved with LOLER. But it may be something we have to look into in regard to our rope access equipment.

What pees me off is electrical PAT testing is not a legal requirement! Equipment just needs to be inspected for safe operation and recorded.

The words "over" and "barrel" spring to mind. Hopefully the accreditations you need to get into where you want won't be too costly.

Think of it as a competitive edge Brad, we have won so much work off the back of SMAS accreditation. There are not many companies outside of the construction industry that bother with this so it really does narrow down the competition.
