It's not fun living on a hill in Yorkshire in winter with no handbrake, especially when you need to stop on the way up at a give way line. Pulling away in front wheel drive car stopped on snow, when there's no handbrake is "fun"

Truck EB is a foot operated thing on the left side. There's no on/off operation
like a handbrake.

Hill holding with a manual xmission is something you practice for.
And large feet help....

Guys it was a joke.
I spend 20 glorious years mucking about with oldtimer LandRover's and i loved them, but we all know the transmission brake is not up to the job if not well maintained. The not really oil tight gear- and transferbox don't help.
Needles to say that the handbrake on all my LandRover's were allways in excellent working order.

Are they the ones that actually have a foot clutch? Friend in the Philippines had a similar setup on his race car.
He could wind it up to 6k then drop the clutch and bang through the gears with ratchet shift auto.

No, they had two pumps. One was at the rear driven by the output shaft.
I have no idea how realistic a push start would be but apparently it was possible.
For the race car look up B and M Clutchflite.

After driving my vw transporter parked outside my house on a incline, 45min later it went down said hill into a neighbors car. Apparently it was a similar thing with the citroens. Discs contracted a bit on cooling. I leave it in reverse now.

Another time at band camp, I was young and had a series 3 landy. I was taking the halfshaft out not thinking the handbrake works on the rear prop and when you remove a shaft it free wheels. It ran over my leg and went down the hill.

It's not a good idea to rotate an engine backwards (could possibly jump cam timing).

Best bet if you are pointing up the hill use Reverse, if you are pointing down the hill use 1st.

Just something to bare in mind.

I’m just surprised someone has not claimed the vehicle must be an EV!

I have always left my ICE vehicles in bottom or reverse gear with the handbrake on. Turning the wheels, to prevent the vehicle being propelled along the road (if hit in the rear) or roll far, is also a sensible precaution.

After nearly 5 months I am still not entirely used to not physically engaging a parking brake on my EV. If park is selected, or it is powered off, the parking brake is automatically engaged. Mine is different to the Teslas in that there are two mechanisms for parking - the extra is a pawl similar to an ICE vehicle with auto gearbox.

Problem with the Parking Pawl is if someone shunts the back of the car it's likely to get broken (and the surrounding components/ housing).

I suppose that's a problem for the insurance to sort out though if it ever happens!.

Its actually a very simple cam actuated mechanism - kept well greased, with a working cable it actually works very well on the only piston in the rear caliper. If you don't know what you are doing when you pull one apart though . . . finding the bits on the floor was fun

Lancia Delta operated on the same principle. For 20 yrs I was convinced it was an issue with aftermarket handbrake cables – the OEM one uses a plastic coated cable, aftermarket tend to be just plain steel cable. The OEM ones lasted a long time – aftermarket would become stiff in a year of daily use – the cable/inside of the outer sheath would rust and bind up.

So I made sure to lubricate them well, hung up, over a period of time, before fitting – seemed to help.

However, when I replaced the seals in the rear calipers a year or two ago, I realised it was the operating lever rusting and seizing in the bushes in the caliper body – the little lip seal on the end didn’t particularly like life under a car. Cleaned up, well lubed, it works very well – I do regret not drilling/cross drilling and fitting a zerk fitting though.

Will happy hold the car, and a fully loaded car transporter trailer (over another tonne) on pretty steep slope.

The thing I don’t like – modern electric handbrakes . . . or hill-hold stuff going on . .

It happened to me within 20 minutes in gear and HB on, still on when I found it parked in the side of a Datsun around the corner and 200 yards down a hill (Nice man owned it and we wrote it off for a small payment as he said it wont pass another MOT)
Tried to drive it away with HB still on is just stalled the motor.
