I don’t think those handbricks will stop a car rolling forward, they’re to small. If I park on a hill, it’s wheels pointing to the verge and in gear.

on this one there was def no acsess to the adjusters....
A retaining spring had broken, shoes almost metal to metal so a massive lip....
had to cut the drum in 1/2 with a grinder........the drums were junk anyway......
I made my own adjuster holes in the backplate.....

Citroën Xantia's used to have the parking brakes on the front discs.
A friend told me that he parked his at the top of a hill (not in gear) - & on return it was parked at the bottom!

Apparently as the front discs cooled & contracted, the parking brake calipers wouldn't have enough grip on the disc, allowing the car to slowly creep away.

Also supposedly is don't park a citroen on grass as the suspension can drop and the hot catalytic convertor can set fire to it.

That looks like a 45 degree slope. Anything steep here I leave a manual in gear as well as the HB.

My auto gets park and the HB but I've never parked on anything steep enough to think I need to chock the wheels too

And with the steering turned towards the curb.

Leaving a manual gearboxed car in gear on a slope doesn't work. If the handbrake lets go, the vehicle will creep down, more or less slowly, with the air leakage past the cylinder rings, and a bit faster each time the valves get opened.

It happened to me once, at a B&B, parked on a 10 degree slope. Engine off. Handbrake didn't quite hold it, and the car slowly kangarooed in gear down the slope as I sat in the car (yes, I could have pulled the handbrake tighter, but thought let's see what happens). The "test" lasted a few minutes, it certainly wasn't days ;-)

After driving my vw transporter parked outside my house on a incline, 45min later it went down said hill into a neighbors car. Apparently it was a similar thing with the citroens. Discs contracted a bit on cooling. I leave it in reverse now.

Another time at band camp, I was young and had a series 3 landy. I was taking the halfshaft out not thinking the handbrake works on the rear prop and when you remove a shaft it free wheels. It ran over my leg and went down the hill.

Alfasud was like that, inboard front disc with handbrake, only ever worked for the MOT week.

My Lancia Beta had something almost as weird - hydraulic brake disks at the rear. The handbrake cable somehow operated one of the pistons, and the back calipers often seized within 6 months of the MOT. It was booked into my mechanic every year for a pre-MOT & rear caliper rebuild

It's not fun living on a hill in Yorkshire in winter with no handbrake, especially when you need to stop on the way up at a give way line. Pulling away in front wheel drive car stopped on snow, when there's no handbrake is "fun"
