Any ideas on the best way to get into a safe?

Don't worry - it's mine. Key lost spare not where it should be
Spent a week on and off looking for keys. Its well built, fixed down and the walls are nearly 75mm thick. Hinges are accessible on the outside and can be burnt through, but it has 50mm diameter stainless pins on the hinge and lock sides. Was considering taking a 9" grinder to the outside wall, beating out the concrete and cutting the inner skin. Any bright ideas on an easier way to go about it?

When I was shopfitting I got a call from one of the shops that had 2 safes, they had managed to get the wrong key stuck in the other safe. Luckily it was open. What I found when I removed the inner skin opened my eyes to the complexity of their working.

It had a thin wire running around the door to which there were 6 shoot bolts. Along the wire were heat sensitive tape; in case of burning, and glass in case of impact. Either would cause these shoot bolts to engage, and thus the door would never open. And the sides are full of concrete, have you ever tried cutting steel with heat with concrete behind it

So if you have a reasonably good safe these and more could be waiting for you. I would go with Posts 2 and 3 ideas. Before the heat and hammers

I had a similar experience with one of those little cheapy household safe things.Passports in it, going on holiday next week. Put new battery in it but still knackered. Ended up ripping it out of the cupboard/wall it was fixed into leaving enormous holes in the masonry, then angle grinding through one side and THEN getting a BFH out to crack it open. Amazingly sturdy thing for 20 quid. I found that some of the crap that Wifey had chucked in there was jammed into the locking pin hole so the electric motor couldn't shift it.

Then I found the spare keys and unlocked it easily.

Locksmith is the way forward mate. They will either be able to do it or know someone who can.

My mother lost the keys a few years ago, turned up a yr later, in a pot of Jam

what sort of lock is on it? use it as a way of learning the art of lock picking google for 'mit guide to lockpicking' as a good starting point

What safe is it? I have many years lock and safe design for many companies. Normally there is an area to drill but that may be too hard. Also if you have glass internal drop bolt then it could be very difficult without spending hours with an industrial grinder or plasma cutter

Brute force is sometimes the only way.

The hinge pins are normally easy to cut through but the bolts are normally impossible to grind through. I have seen many things in the bolts, I have seen them filled with hundreds of roller bearings and gels which set as you cut through.

Best way is not the door but normally the rear

What sort of key is it?Have a look on you tube for many,many ways to bump and otherwise defeat locks.

Other possibles are plumbers freeze into the lock to get it brittle enough to shatter (unlikely).....any exposed hinges (too good to be true)....or peeling the back off manually(dependent on age of safe,they used to be weaker at the back)

.....or a locksmith.Its unlikely that you will open it without damaging it in some way.

And no, it wasn't me.
I found this the hard way while slashing a neighbours paddock.

Angle grinder followed by a BIG hammer and chisel looks like the technique.

I don't think there is much chance of bumping a safe and no chance of freezing any of the wars to break them. The safes are normally not the sort of lock that can simply be bumped with a bump key. Also we have been designing out bumping for some time now.

The manufactures will have designed in a drill point for a lock smith

Stihl saw'd the bottom skin off, 8mm thick. Bashed out the concrete with a 14lb sledge hammer swung by a polish man. Concrete was reinforced with wire mesh.
Gas torch to inner skin, 8mm ish thick.
Took 40 minutes. Easier than i thought. Messy.

Key long gone, spoke to a couple of safe companies who wanted more than the cost of a new one to come out and open it. So we opened it

Luckily everything was inside either a big cash box, or a locked compartment fixed inside the top shelf. That was the idea of going in through the bottom
