Hello!
New to the forum but have been sloooooowly restoring VW's over the years as a home hobbiest (on and off)...
Any of you good people have advice you can share on rusty metal treatment?
I've had a T2 in storage for many years (undercover and outdoors) and the elements have certainly got to parts which were left as bare metal over the years.
I've still got a long way to go but only wanted to do the minimum to make it solid again but maintain as much original paint as material as possible. I want to only replace the bottom 6 inches and the rest will stay ratty. A trailer queen she aint!
So Jenolite was my go to years ago but has anything surpassed it these days? The stuff I ordered recently doesn't seem to be as strong? or maybe my metal is very bad!
Once the surface rust has been addressed should I be etching priming, Zinc 182, epoxy priming, or something else?
What should I be doing behind the rockers? they obviously need to be protected but I'll also need to weld them together.
Once I purchase a welder, panels done and everything's solid I was planning to Upol Raptor the underside (tinted to match the original Sealing Wax red paint) and then possibly try to colour match the other areas like the front panel and rear side quarter (which I replaced and left in bare metal way back).
I've used POR15 on my Beetle before and Rustolium but that was many years ago.
I'm hoping the metal isn't too far gone to treat (the new cargo floors I purchased were sitting in standing water for sometime)
Any hints, tips welcome to help salvage this project.
